Show Board honors drill and soorts team LAYTON The extra cur-ricular cur-ricular achievements of two groups of high school students were recognized recog-nized last Tuesday evening at the bi-monthly meeting of the Davis District Board of Education. The groups receiving this special honor were the Layton High School Wrestling Team that recently won its first state championship title, an achievement that hasn't been accomplished ac-complished by a Davis County high school in over 30 years, and the Davis High School D'Ettes that earned the Sweepstakes trophy at state drill team competition. Individual mention was given to the members of the state wrestling championship team that placed in the state contest. These students were: Danny Cabrey (state champion); cham-pion); Chad Miller (2nd place); Jon David Hammons (2nd place); Ryan Medina (2nd place); Mike Cannon (2nd place); Tony Martinez (2nd place). Other wrestlers who contributed to the success of the team were Jeff Burton, Reed Keller, Brad Thompson, Thomp-son, Danny Doll, Steve Burton, Jason Briscoe and Bryce Free land. In making the presentation, area director, Gavin Carlile, noted Jon David Hammons has a 3.7 GPA, Mike Cannon has a 3.9 GPA and Danny Doll has a 3.7 GPA. The Layton High team is coached by Mike Hansen. He is assisted by Tom Moore and Lynn Foxley. The D'Ettes not only excelled in state competition, but also placed high in the other four competitions that led to the state contest. In December, this drill team placed first in Military and second in Dance at the "Utah Classic" held in Heber City. In January, they took first in Military, first in Dance, second in Prop and the Sweepstakes trophy at the Bountiful invitational. At region they qualified for state with superior ratings in all three categories. After the state contest, they finished fin-ished their season with the National "Miss USA Drill Team" competition competi-tion in California. They received a third place in dance, second in military and first in prop with an invitation in-vitation to take their prop routine to compete in Japan. Josee Fagg, Jenni Kraus and Alisha Smith were among the ten girls chosen for the all-state drill team. The D'Ette advisor is Kim King. She is assisted by Cricket Parry. |
