This year's session will be particularly par-ticularly interesting for this group because they will have an opportunity oppor-tunity to see another Bountiful area representative, Margo Mollan, as she fulfills her duties of Lt. Governor. Gov-ernor. Margo was elected to this position while attending the 1990 session of Utah Girls' State. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Carroll, and is among the current graduating class of Viewmont High School. Application to Girls' State is made by girls in their junior year of high school. Each applicant appears before a panel of judges and is rated on her responses to questions concerning con-cerning current events, knowledge of government, and why she wishes to attend Girls State. In addition, applicants are also rated in the areas of poise, personality and the ability to speak effectively. The American Legion Auxiliary wishes to acknowledge the financial support that this program receives from several local businesses and service organizations. Assuming tuition costs for this year's candidates are the Bountiful Ladies of Elks, the Bountiful Lady Lions, the Soroptomists of Bountiful, Boun-tiful, the Bountiful Business and Professional Women: Kaysville Rotary Club, Valley Bank in Bountiful, Boun-tiful, First Security branches in Kaysville and Farmington, and Barnes Banking Company in Kaysville. Kays-ville. Individual sponsorships were also provided by Nellie Mathis, Dora Trowbridge, and Peggy I1U, who are all members of the American Legion Auxiliary. This highly regarded program provides each participant with a working knowledge of governmental governmen-tal processes, as well as affording an excellent opportunity for leadership leader-ship development and personal growth. Traditionally, the South Davis area representatives in this program have been highly successful in assuming leadership positions on all levels of participation. The local advisor for this group, Merlene Putnam, Put-nam, will be on hand this year to observe their accomplishments as she serves as a city counselor. The prospect of running for the mayor's office, governor, or national senator may seem overly ambitious for the majority of today's citizens, but not for a group of Davis County teen-agers. These offices, plus many more, are precisely what the 16 representatives represen-tatives from Bountiful American Legion Post 79 hope to achieve at the 1991 session of Utah Girls State. Under the sponsorship and direction direc-tion of the American Legion Auxiliary, Auxil-iary, the 43rd annual session of this nationwide program will be held on the campus of Southern Utah State University in Cedar City from Aug. 9-14. The 390 representatives from virtually vir-tually every high school in Utah will form a mythical 51st state. Throughout the week they will conduct con-duct elections for city, county and state offices, as well as organizing a Girls' State legislature. In addition, two national senators will be elected to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. in July. The week-long activities include mass meetings in each of the 14 cities; organizing and nominating conventions for each of the two counties; and organizing and nominating nom-inating conventions for elections on the state level. Throughout the week, officials from Cedar City, Iron County and the state of Utah will be on hand to explain the duties and responsibilities of their elected positions.
