I find it very annoying to call someone just to have them tell me that they can't talk because they're really necessary and valuable. But it doesn't I mean I'll ever learn to like this new I feature of telephone communica- I tion.. .And I don't think Alexander I Graham Bell would have liked it I either! I i SHERRI EINFELDT Correspondent Most of today's new technological advances are designed design-ed to make life easier for us. But there is one fairly new invention that I wish had never come into being: be-ing: telephone call waiting. It has to be one of the most obnoxious devices yet discovered relating to telephone communications. It seems to be a sign of the times, where people have forgotten how to relax and take time to talk one-on-one with folks. You know how it workswhen someone who has the service is talking on the phone and another party calls, a click is heard in the receiver by both parties. (The clicking click-ing itself is bad enough to put a damper on an otherwise pleasant conversation.) They can then put their first caller on hold and answer the second call. While I realize that the purpose behind call waiting is to allow customers to "never miss a call," it on another more important call. (How does that make me feel? I believe I'd rather hear a busy signal from a machine than be rejected by a person.) It's actually ironic-if people don't want to be interrupted, why have a feature that allows them to be interrupted! Now I realize that there are circumstances cir-cumstances where call waiting is |
