Show Bountiful has third highest average income in state By PAUL CHALLIS News Editor BOUNTIFUL A study compiled com-piled by City Manager Tom Hardy shows Bountiful has the third highest average income among the top 20 largest cities in Utah. Hardy did the study to help the council in preparing for the annual fiscal budget "This study shows how we compare com-pare with other cities that are similar simi-lar in size to Bountiful," Hardy said. The categories were broken down into six areas including population, total adjusted gross income, in-come, average adjusted gross income, in-come, direct taxable sales, 1990-91 budgets and number of full-time employees. Bountiful is ninth in population with 36,659, the study said; seventh in total income, $481 million; third in average income, $28,631; 11th in direct sales, $221 million; seventh in total budget, $35 million; 10th in number of employees, 167 and sev enth overall among the 20 cities. "As you can see from the study, population is only a small part of the story when figuring out the annual an-nual budget," Hardy added. Of the 20 cities Bountiful will not use St. George and Salt Lake City in the comparison, but will use the other nine cities of similar size. Salt Lake City has more than three times the population and ranks first in all categories except, average income where it finished fourth, behind Sandy, Kaysville, and Bountiful. St. George, although similar in size to Bountiful, ranks 12 in overall standing, and Hardy said, isn't a fair comparison across the board with Bountiful. St. George was the only city in the top 20 south of Provo. The study also involves services provided by and for the city. Items involved in this study include refuse, water, sewer, electricity, golf courses, cemetery, recreational centers and airport In this part of the study Bountiful has all of the services except an airport. air-port. Only eight of the cities in the study have municipal power, and it would be unfair to evaluate the other cities using that criteria. Many of the 20 cities aren't involved in garbage collection either, and would make it hard to evaluate with Bountiful. Only six of the 20 cities have airports, air-ports, and nine of the 20 do not have golf courses. Unexpected results of the study include that Kaysville is the 17th largest city with 13,961 but has the second high average income among the 20 cities. Kaysville ranks 15th overall. St George ranks 1 2th overall but has the third highest total budget of the 20 cities with $44 million. Murray is ranked eighth overall, but has the third highest direct sales and is 11th in population. Besides Bountiful and Kaysville, the only other Davis County city in the top 20 was Layton. Layton is eighth in population with 41,784, fifth in total income with $27,181, and 10th overall. SEE DATA ON A-2 $30,457, Bountiful with $28,631. Salt Lake City with $27,292 and Layton with $27,181.
