Show Mayor responds Editor: The headline of your article on March 9, 1991, "Coon Takes Wraps Off Allegations,' was totally inaccurate. Not one shred of information or evidence responds to the Council mandate that she produce pro-duce "evidence of corruption in Bountiful' Rather, it is a frustrated person's attempt to find a scapegoat for her personal failure, her organization's failure, and the City's failure to stop a pipeline from crossing the mountains east of Bountiful. My personal position and the position of the City of Bountiful, as reiterated by the City Council in public meetings many times over the past year, has been consistent: I am, and we are, actively opposed to the pipeline. We have represented our citizens interest in public hearings, hear-ings, administrative appeals and federal legislation. Councilwoman Coon is correct that we have not joined with her group in litigation for the same reason we rejected Mojave Pipeline's offer of free legal services ser-vices (which her group accepted). Our motives and reasons for opposing oppos-ing the pipeline are different and much narrower in scope than the Sierra Club and Utah Wildlife Federation Fed-eration (her group's partners in the lawsuit). and clearly restate that this is not a "claim." It is a acf-the pipeline never enters the city limits of Bountiful! Boun-tiful! Councilwoman Coon savs she "hopes her documented statement would turn a few lights on for other City Council members. I hope they can see what's actually going on." This Council does not operate in a vacuum. I'm sure she has accomplished ac-complished her mission and they do see what's going on. As far as the last paragraph in your article, wherein she asks that I "remove myself," I will continue to function as Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer of Bountiful until those who elected me to this position choose otherwise. Bob Linnell Mayor Wake up Editor: What has happened to our leadership leader-ship in Utah that is to protect our freedoms? Why can't our loved ones who live in Bountiful and who are returning, be heard when opposing oppos-ing the pipeline coming through there? Aren't there other canyons to use in place of our favorite gathering place, hiking place and park (that they want to run the pipeline through)? Thousands of citizens who have expressed vehement opposition have been totally ignored, it seems! No wonder armed militia have gathered in past times to protect their rights. Will it take this? No one wants to be living by a time bomb, especially if some "crack pot" decides to shoot into the pipeline or commit an act of vandelism so common. Our temple there will also be in danger. Everyone! Please wake up to this danger. Andria Call Honolulu Borrowed earth Editor: I think that as members of society it is our responsibility to become aware of the problems concerning our environment. Not only do we have a responsibility to ourselves, we have even a greater responsibility responsibili-ty to younger generations. Lately there has been a lot of attention at-tention given to en v ironmental issues. Earth Day was widely publicized pub-licized and it did a great deal for environmental awareness. The diaper companies have launched a campaign to create the totally biodegradable diaper, laundry detergents de-tergents are now coming in smaller packages and McDonalds is serving all of their sandwiches in paper wrappers instead of the environmentally envir-onmentally harmful Styrofoam cartons. car-tons. All of the changes are nice, but by no means are they enough. Every day more and more forests are cut down, the ozone layer has holes in it, and hazardous chemicals threaten not only animal life but human life as well. As members of society, we should not assume that all is well with the environment just because a few companies decide to I make some product changes. The I danger here is to assume that some- I one else is taking care of the prob- I lem. I An environmental slogan which I was quoted in the article "A Bet on I Planet Earth" found in the New I York Times summarizes what I am I trying to say very well. "We do not I inherit the earth from our parents. I We borrow if from our children. ' ' I Shawn Johnson I Bountiful I Thank you Editor: I As a family we wish to express I our sincere thanks and appreciation I for the professionalism and care ex- I tended to us by the Farmington I Police Department and Davis Coun- I ty Sheriff's Office during the early I December accidental passing of our I wife and mother Julianne Schultz. I Farmington Police Officer Gary I Jensen, and Davis County Sheriff's L Detectives Glenn Parker and Mike Olson were uniformly warm and considerate, while being methodical and efficient in their handling of a most difficult task. Lt. Kenneth Payne, and others in the Sheriff's department including Messrs. Larsen, Hunt, Fielding, Ellison and Mrs. Giles helped get us through a difficult period through their concern con-cern and desires to help. We are fortunate to be served by these caring professionals, and we want them to know publicly of our gratitude. Conrad Schultz, Farmington Lindy Schultz, Farmington Andrea Schutz Groen, Salt Lake City The professional legal advice the City has received from attorneys familiar with FERC and this project is that legal challenges would be very costly and we probably would not prevail. So far they have been right, and Councilwoman Coon's group has been wrong. So far Councilwoman Coon's group has yet to prevail on one legal issue, and they have not stopped or even slowed slow-ed the pipeline down. Because our attorneys, our City Council and our staff publicly discussed this matter and reached a different conclusion than she wants to hear, she wants me to 4 'remove myself.' That's an interesting request, re-quest, considering that not two months ago she made a motion to donate City taxpayer funds to support sup-port the Sierra Club, Utah Wildlife Federation and her group. (Her motion mo-tion died at the Council meeting for ' lack of a second.) Councilwoman Coon questions my conduct. As a resident of Bountiful Boun-tiful for over 30 years, as a Councilman Coun-cilman for four years, as a member of the Bountiful Power Commission, Commis-sion, as a businessman, and as a mission president for the LDS Church, there were issues on which I disagreed with others. However, my character and integrity have never been assaulted. ' I would dismiss Councilwoman Coon's allegations of "corruption" and "abuse of the public trust' except ex-cept that she has also impugned the actions of the rest of the City Council Coun-cil and damaged the good name of the City of BountifuL Bountiful has an outstanding record of good, clean, honest, effective government The balance of the City Council has acted together on the pipeline issue, i I will be making a public state ment at the Council meeting on i Wednesday, March 13, addressing I all of the misrepresentations and in- nuendos in Councilwoman Coon's letter to the Clipper. Her letter is full of outright inaccuracies and I statements taken out of context and devoid of any facts or evidence of corruption. As far as her question, "why he had opposed legal action..., my response in the article stands: We have and will take independent legal action when we deem it appropriate. ap-propriate. I will continue to meet with and respond to inquiries from anyone who wishes access to the Mayor of Bountiful-whether it be private citizens, contractors, employees, other elected officials, or pipeline people. Pipeline people will get the same attention and courtesy anyone else receives. As Mayor, I must do that in order to not "abuse the public pub-lic trust Your article says, "Another point of issue is Linnell 's claim that the pipeline does not cross Bountiful City property.
