Show SU T-Bird gymnasts hopeful about meet within 2.5 points of Adams State. "We have four girls who could be serious contenders for the all-around all-around championship," Berg explains. "Breoda Shaw has our best all-around all-around score this year, but with good days, Karen Smith or. Janet Jorgensen or Mechele Hebberd could also take all-around honors." Shaw (freshman, West Valley City) has an average all-around score of 29.31. Her best is a 30.4 for the four events. Smith (freshman. West Jordan) averages 28.59, Jorgensen (sophomore, Sigurd) 28.53, and Hebberd (sophomore, Riverton) 28.15. Also traveling will be JoAnne Pflug (sophomore, Salt Lake City), who, except for a drop in her score two weeks ago, has been one of the most consistent performers on the squad. Yolanda Mont ova (freshman, Flagstaff, Ariz.) has been out much of the season with ankle and back injuries. Whether or not she will be able to make the trip is still unsure. If she does go, she will probably compete only on the bars and beam. The team has finished well over the national qualifying mark and will make the trip next w eek to Milledgeville, Ga., for the national meet. "We have girls who could do well in the all-around all-around nationally, and girls who could easily do very well in individual events," Berg says. "I think that a strong performance in the conference meet could really boost us for the national competition the following week." CEDAR CITY -Southern Utah State College gymnasts will have high hopes of climbing higher man the traditional fourth place when they compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference gymnastics championships Saturday. The Thunderbird gymnasts have finished fourth for each of the past two seasons, but this week in Alamosa, Colo., SUSC figures it has a good shot at third place, and could sneak 'into second. Southern Colorado, the conference favorite appears to be too strong to catch. "Aside from the usual aches and pains, we are in good physical shape," Kathryn Berg, SUSC coach says. "I am very pleased with our workouts this week. We have had fewer falls, fewer form breaks, and we have performed very smooth routines." SUSC has scored higher than Western State two of the three times the two schools have been in meets together, and two weeks ago at Alamosa, the Thunderbirds came |
