CEDAR CITY The newly restored Paiute Tribe of Southern Utah recently submitted its final reservation plans to the Department of the Interior. The Department of the Interior will now review the Paiute land selections and make a decision on whether or not to approve them and give the land to the Tribe. "We don't know exactly when the Department of the Interior will make their final decision known to us," explained Travis Benioh, Paiute Tribal Council chairman. "I feel it is a good plan. It is based on the concerns heard in consultation," Benioh went on to say. The Paiutes' final reservation selections included two parcels near Cove Fort, a parcel near the Kanarraville interchange of Interstate 15, and parcels near Joseph, Koosharem, Fish Lake and East Sevier. "We dropped a number of parcels and compromised as much as possible," said Benioh, who expressed optimism that the present plan would probably be approved by the Department of the Interior, One land selection that was dropped after heated discussions with residents of Parowan, was a 5,000 acre plan near Brian Head. Benioh also explained that if the Department of the Interior does make any suggestions for the Paiutes to drop certain parcels of land, that the Tribe would go with their recommendations. "It is too late in (he ballgame to pick any more land," he said. The Paiutes' next step will be toward developing the selected lands. According to Benioh, it is the Tribe's wish to become self-sufficent through obtaining these new reservation lands. Benioh also added that it was not the Tribe's intension to tie up these lands. There are people who feel that after the Tribe obtains these lands that it won't let anyone on them, but this is definitely not the intention, he said. "It is our desire to be good neighbors," Benioh said. He also explained that the new developments will bring new jobs to the communities where the land parcels are located not only for Paiutes, but residents of the surrounding areas as well.
