Show PHS drops two in region games PAROWAN The Parowan Rams went on the road last weekend, and the road proved to be unkind as Parowan's hosts Gunnison and North Sevier rudely thwarted the Rams by respective 59-50 and 65-59 scores. "We didn't play well," explained Ram coach Mark Heppler. "Against Gunnison it was 12-2 before we got off the bus. Both nights we started out slow. We came home pretty humble." PHS had the same problem against both Region 12 foes; they got off to very poor s starts and dug holes both nights that were just too deep to get out of. The Rams trailed Gunnison 18-8 at the end of one period of play, and they were down 17-5 at the end of the first quarter against North Sevier. From that point on in both games, Parowan played well. It was a case too little too late. "We came out flat," Heppler said, referring t to the Gunnison contest. "We really shot poorly, and they made very few mistakes." The Rams had 10 steals against Gunnison, but they threw the ball away on several fast-break attempts following those steals. "They had really good ball movement, and they shot really well," Heppler said. Parowan was tough underneath, grabbing 44 team rebounds. Doug Rogerson had 20 of those boards to lead the Parowan assault o on the glass. Rogerson also blocked four shots and scored 23 points. As a team, PHS had 11 assists, with Robbie Stevens getting five of those gifts. Kelly Orton was the only other Ram scoring in double figures. Orton hit for 12 points. After trailing 18-8 at the end of one period, the Rams fought back and were behind 30-22 at the half. They closed that gap to 41-38 at the end of three periods but fell behind in the .fourth quarter and were forced to foul. Gunnison was successful at the line an that was the old ballgame. Saturday's contest with North Sevier was an instant replay. Trailing 17-5 at the conclusion of the first quarter, the Rams progressed somewhat to a 29-20 halftime deficit. They trailed 43-36 at the end of three quarters and couldn't quite make up enough, losing by six. Parowan again dominated the boards, getting a total of 40 team rebounds. Rogerson and Mike Robinson led the takedown effort with 14 and 13 boards respectively. Eight of Rogerson's total were offensive and Robinson had nine offensive rebounds. Parowan couldn't hit on the second and third chances. Parowan had a tremendous night tor thefts, stealing the ball 26 times. Again they couldn't convert and put the ball down. Robbie Stevens had seven steals, Rogerson, Robinson and Orton had five each. "We got our hands on the ball a lot," said Heppler. The Rams turned the ball over 17 times against North Sevier. They had 17 assists. Rogerson again led the scoring effort with 19. Stevens hit 17, and Kelly Orton added 8. |
