Show Student selected for e ngine e ring award CEDAR CITY - A 17-year-old freshman, who came to the United States from Singapore less than a year ago, has been named the Outstanding Engineering student for 1982 at Southern Utah State College. Yao-Ching Ku, son of Dr. and Mrs. Peter Nel, Orange, Calif., received the honor from the physical science and engineering faculty at SUSC. He was selected from the 62 students currently enrolled in the two-year SUSC engineering program. Ku is an honor student at SUSC, earning high honor roll status fall quarter for a 4.0 grade point average of straight "A" report card. He is attending SUSC with an older brother, 19-year-old Po-Tsan Ku, who achieved high honor roll status for his pre-med studies. "Yao-Ching has demonstrated very clearly his exceptional abilities as an engineering student ," said Richard N. Kimball, associate professor of engineering. "He is getting a good strong start in his profession. He's only 17, yet his professional goals are very clear." Ku will be honored at an engineering banquet which is in conjunction with National Engineering Week. "Space Shuttle A New Era in Space Research" will be discussed at the SUSC banquet by Dr. John Raitt, project scientist with the Utah State University Center for Atmospheric and Space Sciences. The educational system in Singapore is very different from that here, Ku notes. "It's more relaxed here, students are able to form much closer relationships with their professors." Students have to pass an examination between their junior and senior year in the Singapore school he attended, a very stressful situation, the SUSC student said. |
