Show Groups deserving of 4pat on the back' growth is like listening to children speaking about Santa Claus. They can hardly restrain themselves. By Mike Cannon There are a couple of groups in Cedar City that deserve a hearty "pat on the back" for outstanding efforts and boundless enthusiasm. The Cedar City Industrial Park Committee, under the direction of the Cedar City Council, and the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce Industrial Development Board are staffed with some enthusiastic and hard-working individuals. Listening to these people talk about industrial development and promoting Iron County as a place of industrial with the many great advantages of our area for new businesses coming in. Whenever one of the members of either committee gets a chance to speak in a public meeting or press gathering, they get wound up like a non-stoppable toy. It's kind of fun to listen to because it's obvious they fully believe what they're telling you and plan to make their dreams a reality. Hopefully these two zealous bodies will continue their dedicated efforts to promote ' this area as one ripe for industrial in-dustrial development. They certainly . Everybody in town must have the ABCs of the hows and whys of promoting industry down pat, along seem to be taking their task seriously, and maybe the area will see the fruits of their labors in the not-to-distant future. Another group that deserves a petunia, or whatever Dan Valentine sends, is the Cedar City Council. It's a wonder local theatres stay in business with the entertainment competition the mayor and councilmen provide on a regular basis. The talent is terrific, and they do an effective and time-efficient job in the process. Sure, nobody will agree with every decision made by any elected offical or body. The Council generally reaches a well thought-through decision on most matters and utilizes meeting time effectively. ef-fectively. Part of the group's effectiveness has. to come from the fact that they don't always see eye-to-eye on political matters. It's nothing to see Harold "Huck" Shirley and Lee Fife rifle bowling balls at each other (politically speaking, of course) or to witness Barbara Starr holding Jack Carter in a political headlock. Even Harold Hiskey whips some heavy business and economic lingo on the democrats, correcting their obvious misunderstandings. misun-derstandings. Best of all, this action is happening as the group previews an upcoming Fiddlers III attraction, makes zoning decisions and weighing whether or not to ticket stray dogs parked dangerously close to fire hydrants. Quite a dedicated group, actually, and one deserving of a serious and sincere pat on the back. |
