Show . ENSIGN A. F. THOMSON Men Needed for Merchant Marine Service Ensign A. F. Thomson, regional enrolling officer of the war shipping ship-ping administration, 11th area, was in St. George last Saturday to interview all young men between be-tween the ages of 16 and 17 Vz for positions aboard merchant ships. The need for men to man the merchant ships which deliver the guns, planes, food, ammunition and supplies to all the fighting fronts is extremely urgent at this time of invasion when 4000 merchant ships are being used to open the the second front in Europe. The Maritime service has been given the job of recruiting more men in the next few months than it has ever recruited before, Ensign En-sign Thomson said. Ensign Thomson further stated that all branches of training are now open: Deck, engine, stewards, stew-ards, radio, hospital-corpsmen and pursers department, and that the Merchant Marine offers good pay, world wide travel and a post-war job. Enrollment in the Maritime Service is for 3 to 6 months of training wjth transportation from the enrolling office at 433 Utah Oil building, Salt Lake City to the training station furnished. The enrollee receives $50 a month while in training, clothing and living liv-ing accommodations. , . Men with 14 months past sea experience in the engine and deck department of a merchant or naval vessel are eligible for officers' offi-cers' training in the Maritime Service, which qualifies the applicant appli-cant to sit for his third mates' or third assistant engineer's license, as well as making him eligible for an Ensign's commission in the U. S. Maritime Service. All applicants appli-cants are urged to apply at the U., S. Employment office in St. George, immediately. |
