Show State Candidates Put On Vigorous Campaign; Only One Race In County Republican Leaders Urge Support for Watson In U. S. Congressional Race With only one position being contended con-tended for in the local ticket, there seems to be little local occasion oc-casion for political enthusiasm for the coming primary election. However, How-ever, the competition on both major tickets in the state indicate indi-cate that the party activities may reach high temperatures as election elec-tion day approaches. Urge Support of Watson Leaders of the Republican party in the county are urging the wholehearted support of the voters vot-ers for Daniel Clark Watson for Congressman, and express belief that if the people get behind him. St. George's incumbent mayor can win on July 11. Opposing him are Stephen Abbott, William Peterson and B. H. Stringham. Both parties have issues at stake on the state positions. Competing Com-peting for governor are Stanley N. Child and Herbert B. Maw on the Democratic ticket; with J. Bracken Lee and Reed E. Vetterli on the Republican ticket. All four men are well known throughout through-out the state, and it appears there may be a close race for each pair of candidates. The position of superintendent of public instruction is also being sought by two candidates from each party. Allen E. Bateman and David Gourley are on the Democratic side of the fence, with Burton K. Farnsworth and Kenneth Ken-neth E. Mills on the Republican ticket. Both Mr. Gourley and Mr. Farnsworth are well known in this area. Four Republicans are on the ticket for United States Senator, including: Adam S. Bennion. Oscar W. Carlson, George H. Crow and David J. Wilson. This should furnish a lot of guesses even for the Republicans, as all four men are well groomed and have been doing active campaigning. Two State Offices Opera Two other state positions are under contention on the Democratic Demo-cratic ticket. Ferrel H. Adams and Oliver G. Ellis are out for the job of state auditor, with J. E. Holmes and Reese M. Reese in the line-up for state treasurer. Mr. Ellis and Mr. Reese are both holding state positions at present. Mr. Adams has experience as a Salt Lake City auditor. With still a week end to get things stirring, some group may manage to steam up the politica' pot more than is being done a', present, but thus far the simmering simmer-ing is not sufficient to give any chance for guesses as to the how the vote will go. |
