Show St. George Youth Recreation Center Officially Opened Here On Friday, June 30th The St. George youth recreation center officially opened its doors Friday evening, June 30, as "Club Friend Ship". Little Billie Bleak, atop the shoulders of Calvin Cot-tarn, Cot-tarn, Seaman First Class, christened christ-ened the trim miniature steamer which was constructed as the club's official emblem. A large group of young people attended with Harold Hafen and Miss Erma Woodbury in charge of the program. Preceding the christening of the ship, Mr. Hafen read the constitution and by-laws which had been framed for the club. After a short discussion these were discussed, setting the membership ages from 14 to 30, provided the regulations of the club are complied with. After the christening, while some played ping-pong, others danced on the ship's deck, a section of the floor which had been roped off for the purpose. Rulon Foster and his orchestra furnished the music. Located In Reber Building The center is located in the R. M. Reber building on the corner of Main and Tabernacle streets, and while the space is small for the large numbers who are obtaining memberships, this is regarded as sufficient for thr experiment, with the assuranc of larger permanent quarters if the project works. During tin evening, girls in sailor custumc: sold light sandwich lunches to se' up the club's first funds, ant' while the net results were not a much as hoped for, the sponsor-feel sponsor-feel the adventure is one in th right direction and will work ou: effectively in time. On Saturday evening, Mr Hafen and Miss Woodbury me' with the St. George city council who appropriated $100 for the summer experiment, which wil' provide the rent of the building The girls of the organization hav hemmed and hung the drapes provided pro-vided by the Legion Auxiliary, anc' have other projects under way for fitting and furnishing th; center. A large group of parents an'' older citizens witnessed the christening chris-tening of "Club Friend Ship", from outside the building, and expressed ex-pressed appreciation for the beginning be-ginning of something which it i : hoped will become permanent. Civic clubs and other groups arr backing this youth movement anc1 the young people are responding in a fine way, say those in charge. |
