Show Washington County War Board To Fight Black Market Danger Washington county war board is prepared to carry out its part in complying with Secretary Wick-ard's Wick-ard's recent orders providing that permits will be required for all commercial slaughtering, a move aimed at stamping out the black market in meat, Wilford A. Schmutz, chairman of the war board stated. The responsibility of issuing slaughter permits to all persons in small towns and rural areas who butcher animals for other than their own use has been given to the war board, which will also issue permits to dealers in livestock. live-stock. Under the new program any person who slaughters animals for the delivery of meat must, in all instances, obtain a permit ; to slaughter. This order goes into effect at midnight, Mar. 31st. Farmers who slaughter animals only for home use need not obtain permits, but a permit is required if they deliver any of the meat to others. Slaughterers who deliver meat must also have an individual permit per-mit number after Mar. 31st, the chairman explained.. Slaughterers who operate under federal, state, county or city inspection will use the same numbers they now stamp on wholesale meat cuts. Other slaughterers will be given numbers for the first time and will be required re-quired to stamp in a deep purple color these numbers which must be at least inch high and be preceded by the letter "P" conspicuously con-spicuously on each wholesale cut of meat delivered. Under the dealer permit, anyone any-one in Washington county who deals in livestock, who buys and sells, cattle, hogs and sheep and who keeps them for less than 30 days, is considered a dealer and is required to get a permit from (Continued on page eight) Meat Black Market (Continued from first page) the county war board. He receives no stamp of any kind and as far as the permit plan is concerned he may sell to anybody he chooses but he must keep a complete record of his livestock purchases and sales. Applications and permits for all farmers affected by the order and all butchers and slaughterers and dealers in livestock are now available avail-able at the county war board office of-fice at the Federal building, room 10, St. George. |
