Show Third College Forum Draws Large Crowd Sunday Nite In Library In lieu of the book review announced an-nounced for last Sunday evening's library hour, faculty members of the Dixie college presented the third in their series of forum themes "Religion and the World at War", which was ably covered by Pearson H. Corbett of the L. D. S. Seminary and Royden Braithwaite of the Institute of Religion. An unusually large audience greeted the speakers and found much food for thought. Pres. Glenn E. Snow introduced the speakers giving a short statement state-ment as to the two previous lectures, lec-tures, one by H. L. Reid on, "History "His-tory and the World War", and one by Maurice J. Miles on, "Science and the World War", also outlining outlin-ing the program as planned for the next several weeks, these to include "Labor and Capital", "Nu-trion "Nu-trion and the War Effort", and the "Mission from Moscow", the latter by Newell R. Frei, with dates to be announced. Interspersing Inter-spersing these will be the stake conference of next Sunday and the following Sunday evening the review of Kronin's "Keys of the Kingdom", by Mrs. Orval Hafen. These programs are made available, avail-able, stated President Snow, because be-cause it is felt that citizens need to know what they are up against, to understand the enemy, to awake to the future, and know that the problem is big and is serious. Presenting the problem from the L. D. S. point of view, Pearson H. Corbett urged agreement with 'Abraham Lincoln in the desire "to be on the Lord's side", which would be the side of right, saying say-ing that war upsets man's religious relig-ious ideals from every angle. In his opinion the L. D. S. church recognizes this earth war of today as a continuation of the great conflict in Heaven before the world was, with the thought repeated re-peated wars will no doubt follow until the earth is weeded of greed, jealousy, fear and hate, which are the seeds of war in the hearts of men. He quoted L. D. S. authorities authori-ties from their various addresses through the past two years, emphasizing em-phasizing that sin is war and righteouness is peace, that war comes because men forget Christ; that the love of God and fellow man must be in the hearts of men before wars can be averted; that the gospel of Christ has all the factors which the warring world of today needs to bring about peace. Approaching the subject from the general Christian viewpoint, Royden Braithwaite said that all Christian believers have faith that peace will one day reign upon earth, that the more than 800,000 L. D. S. people scattered throughout through-out the earth believe that Christ is the light and the way and the truth, and said the 650,000 other Christians do believe in Christ, that there will be a world of tomorrow, that Christianity will not utterly fail, and that the spiritual spir-itual foundations must be laid for a just and endurable peace or we shall not find it. The fear is that i if totalitarian governments win this present war, the light of world civilization will flicker and go out, which they seek to avert with the upbuilding of spiritual ideals of life, in the thought that to Christians has been entrusted the gospel of redemptive love. |
