Show ASHLAND KENTUCKY TEAM ARE VICTORS Ashland, Ky., won the high school basketball championship of the United States, defeating Canton, 111., 15 to 10, in the finals of the University of Chicago Chi-cago national interscholastic tournament tourna-ment at Chicago last Saturday. The game was essentially defensive from start to finish, both teams playing play-ing cautious basketball, with Ashland maintaining a tight defense that forced forc-ed the Illinois champions to a long shooting game. The Kentucky champions cham-pions scored only four field goals, but took advantage of Canton's fouls to score seven points from the free throw line. Third place in the tournament went to Grand Forks, N. D., by a win over Vienna, Ga., 27 to 25, in the playoff for third place. Wheeling, W. Va., took the consolation flight, winning from Naugatuck, Conn., 29 to 28, in the final game, an extra period affair. Seven schools placed men on the all-tournament all-tournament teams selected by the newspaper men. Ellis Johnson of the Ashland team was unanimous choice for guard position and was given captaincy cap-taincy of the first five. Shelby Stamper of Carr Creek, Ky., and Wendell Home of Vienna drew the forward positions with Theorore Raines of Vienna at center and Russell Rus-sell Cardosi of Canton at the other guard. In winning, the Ashland team set what is said to be a tournament record, rec-ord, not being guilty of a single foul. It was a great game of clean guarding, on the part of the southerners. Captain Ellis Johnson, all-tournament, led his teammates to victory, directing the play on both the defense and offense. His success at the free throw line with four free throws, was instrumental in turning the tide in favor of the Kentucky champions. |
