Chicago, April 7, 1928 Washington County News, St. George, Utah, your high school eliminated from national basketball tournament this afternoon by Canton, Illinois,, by score of 22 to 17, in one of best games seen in the classic. NEWS. CHICAGO. After battling its way to the quarter finals in the national basketball tournament at Chicago, St. George lost to Canton, 111., Friday afternoon af-ternoon by a score of 22 to 17. The game was a battle between two sterling defenses, with both so difficult of penetration that much of the scoring scor-ing was done from long range. St. George was trailing at the quarter, quar-ter, 5 to 2, brought the score up to 10 to 9 at the half, and did all the scoring scor-ing in the third quarter to lead at the end of that period, 14 to 10. The teams fought neck and neck for most of the final quarter, but the Utah team's desperate efforts to score as the time grew short left its goal unguarded, un-guarded, and two field goals and a free throw gave Canton the margin needed for victory. With bohh Canton and St. George taking no chances and playing defensive defen-sive basketball there were no scores until midway of the first quarter. Romney made the first when he gave up after twice attempting to dribble into the Canton goal and dropped a field goal in from long range. Schnell tied the score by shooting from just inside mid-floor, and Cardosi put Canton in the lead when he took a short pass and lifted a field goal in from beneath the net. Coleman Cole-man made a free throw to put Canton on top 5 to 2 as the first quarter ended. Canton spurted into the lead as the second period got under way, Schnell dropping through another long field goal from the side line, and Eddy making mak-ing two free throws. Pectol kept St. George in the running run-ning when he dribbled in and tilted in a short basket, and Lorraine Cox made the Canton margin still narrower by taking a short pass from Romney and tipping a field goal in. Stratton and Coleman each made a free throw as the half ended. Canton led 10 to 9. St. George spurted out in front to start the second half. Romney dropped drop-ped a field goal through from long range, and Lorraine Cox put in a short basket and made a free throw to give St. George the lead 14 to 10 as the quarter ended. Canton tied the score early in the final period, Mace and Eddy making free throws and Schnell tossing a field goal while his back was turned to the basket. A double foul was called, and Ken Cox and Cardosi kept the score tied by sinking a free throw apiece. Eddy tipped a field goal in, and Canton attempted to stall. Romney, however, charged in and took the ball, passing long to Lorraine Cox. Cox broke in under the basket, and tied the score again by tilting the ball through. Coleman was shoved and dropped a free throw into the basket to put Canton Can-ton in the lead for the last time, and Schnell and Eddy took advantage of the disorganized condition of the St. George defense to put through a short field goal apiece as the game ended.
