Show REVIVING OLD SILVER REEF Developing Cobb Mine Which is One of Eight Properties Now in Shape to Work Development of the old workings of the Silver Reef is now going forward rapidly and new ore bodies are being uncovered and developed by the Silver Reef Mines company under the super-intendency super-intendency of Alex Colbath. A new compressor was installed in February at the Cobb mine and three machine drills are being used in the operations at this property. Real progress pro-gress is being made and the crew is averaging 500 feet monthly. Practically Practic-ally all this footage is in ore of mill grade'. The Cobb is one of eight properties at Silver Reef in shape to be worked at the present, being free from water. Later otner mines in the district will be dewatered, and from all indications the extent of the ore bodies at the Reef is unlimited. At the Cobb the lower working are 500 feet below any former mining on the white reef and the ore is still holding hold-ing out. The writer visited the district dis-trict Monday and in company with Alex Colbath explored the lower levels of this mine. Several thousand feet of faces of ore of mill grade ready to stope were seen in the Cobb. Work will be started this month on two properties adjoining the Cobb where development work will also be done, the principal object being to uncover un-cover the ore bodies and get them in shape to stope. A mill will be installed at the Reef and by working the ore on the ground a profit may be made from the low-grade low-grade down to 7 ounce ore. It is estimated esti-mated from essays made that the old tailings and dumps from former working work-ing will average around nine ounces, but from all indications there is enough pay ore in the different properties to keep a mill of 300 ton capacity operating steadily for many years without resorting to the tailings and dumps from former workings. The type of mill to be installed on the Silver Reed, property has not as yet been decided on, although it will probably be flotation and cyanidation, and will be of 300 ton capacity. Some idea of the immensity of the field may be had from the fact that the reef can be traced for a distance of seven miles and it is estimated that the sandstone formation extends to a depth of 3000 to 4000 feet, and the fact that the ore is showing good values on the lower workings of the Cobb would indicate that there is just as big a possibility of uncovering rich ore at 3000 feet as there is at 200 feet. The aim of the company is to do deep mining min-ing in the district, as they are convinced convinc-ed values will continue at depth. The only other known place on earth where silver occurs in sandstone is at Mansfield, Germany. The mines at that place have been worked for the past seven hundred years and are still producing over five million dollars worth of silver yearly. |
