Show Gene Fullmer to appear at benefit, February 15 Fighters from Utah and Colorado will clash in a Golden Gloves Boxing Benefit Show, Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Uintah High School gymnasium. The benefit show will be sponsored by Vernal Elks' Lodge 2375. The money made in the boxing program will go to the local Elks' Lodge for their amateur boxing program and to Utah champs who will be competing in the national tournament and the Olympics. Gene Fullmer of West Jordan, Utah, who was the world's middleweight champion in 1957 and from 1959 to 19G2, will be at the boxing show in Vernal. Fullmer is the president of the Utah chapter of Golden Gloves. Fuller will also serve as a referee in the Vernal bouts. Champions from Utah, Colorado and local fighters will compete in the Vernal Ver-nal meet. Some of the boxers from the Uintah Basin who will compete in the boxing show are: Larry Harrison. 105. Vernal; Eddie Martinez. 147; Steve Parryman, 210 pounds; Michael Martinez, Mar-tinez, 80, and Gerald Williams. 139. Roosevelt. "There will be 15 bouts of three rounds each. The rounds will consist of three minutes. The purpose of the benefit show is to establish a permanent perma-nent amateur boxing club in Vernal. The boxing matches will mainly consist con-sist of fighters who are 16 years old and up. There will be state, regional and national champs from Utah and Colorado at the benefit show in Vernal, Feb. 15.; stated Harry Miller, Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves Director. The local Vernal Elks' Lodge chairman for boxing is Jack Voyles. Fees will be charged for general admission and ringside seats. Utah's Gene Fullmer gained his world middleweight crown on Jan. 2, 1957, when he decisioned Sugar Ray Robinson in Madison Square Garden in New York City. Fuller's first hold on the title lasted a short time, as Robinson Robin-son regained the title he had lost in January w ith a fifth-round knock-out on May 1, 1957. Fullmer re-acquired the crow n w hen he beat Carmen Basilio in San Francisco Fran-cisco on August 28, 1959. West Jordan's Fullmer had three title defense in Utah. He fought Spider Webb in Logan, battled battl-ed Carmen Basilio in Salt Lake City and encountered Florentino Fernandez in Ogdcn Fullmer also fought Paul Pender, Joey Giardello, Dick Tiger and Benny 'Kid'- Parrel, the latter a former welterweight champion.
