Toppled mailboxes and tire tracks at the base of the boxes were left by vandals van-dals the night before. Mailbox vandalism frequents area A continuing problem to the Vernal Post Office and county residents is the frequent damages to mailboxes. Four mailboxes were knocked over last Tuesday along 500 South by a motor vehicle and the week before the Post Office Of-fice received reports of other boxes being be-ing destroyed. "Our total damages to mail boxes is as high as the Wasatch Front," Postmaster John Jones said. "Persons should be aware that it is a federal offense to tamper with mailbox es," he added. The people who are hurt the worst from the damages are the owners of the boxes. They have to pay for a new box and their mail is held at the Post Office until they pick it up. "Sometimes all people find left of their mail is ashes because someone has blown up their box," said Postmaster Jones referring to actual occurences. Jones advised people to take down license numbers and report any tampering with boxes. |
