Flaming Gorge YCC Camp The second Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Camp of the summer at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area will soon be ending. Forty enrollees from throughout the state of Utah have participated in the camp since it opened July 13. YCC Crews have assisted the Forest Service for the past seven summers in campground and trail maintenance, fence construction, and litter pick-up. Camp Director Cleve Yates and a staff from throughout the United States operate the 7-day residential camp, which is housed in Dutch John, Utah. The objectives of the program, according ac-cording to Yates, are gainful em-" ployment of youth, an opportunity for understanding the nation's natural environment and heritage, and maintenance of natural resources by the youth who will ultimately be responsible for managing those resources. Accordingly, enrollees are paid for a 30-hour work week, with an additional 10 hours per week devoted to environmental awareness oriented activities. Youths 15 through 18 years of ago who are interested in becoming YCC members should contact their high school counselors in February and March to be eligible the following summer. Campers may earn ' high school credit in science through participating par-ticipating in YCC. |
