Show Uirrtah girls' hoop teejsn downs Donee in Isv roond The Carbon Dinos had a 10 to 6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Uintah Utes outscored the crew from Price, 32 to 22, in the next three quarters to win a first round game in the Uintah Tournament in Vernal, Friday, 38 to 32. Pam Poulous and Carolyn Borla burned the Utes in the first quarter with an amazing field goal performance. Poulous hit three field goals and Borla fired in two two-pointers. Uintah's Rhonda Rhodes connected on two free throws and a field goal, and Teresa Smith converted two charity tosses in the first quarter. Uintah broke out of its scoring slump with ten points in the second quarter on two field goals by Lisa Jorgensen and two-pointers by Darian Abegglen, Jodene Merkley and Pennie Murray. Uintah held Carbon to two points in the second quarter on a field goal by Danette Hamilton. The score at the end of the second quarter was Uintah, 16 and Carbon, 12. The Dinos popped in a field goal early in the third quarter to cut Uintah's lead to two points, but Smith connected on a two-pointer, which was set up on a pass from Chris Mott, to give Uintah an 18 to 14 advantage. Lynnette Merrell and Abegglen tossed in field goals to increase in-crease the Uintah lead to eight points, 22 to 14. Carbon scored three points on a field goal and a free throw to cut Uintah's lead to three points, 22 to 19, but Abegglen fired the ball into the hoop for a five point Uintah lead. Hamilton popped in a field goal to cut Uintah's lead to three points and Abegglen hit one free throw with no time left on the clock to make the score at the end of the third quarter, Uintah, 25 and Carbon, 21. Mott and Abegglen gave the Uintah Utes a 30 to 24 lead. Mott stole the ball and flipped it in for two points. Abegglen converted a free throw attempt at-tempt and hit one field goal. Uintah increased its average to eight points with four points in a row by Rhodes on two free throws and a field goal. However, Carbon hit three straight field goals to cut Uintah's lead to two points, 34-32, with 54 seconds left in the game. Uintah locked up the victory with two charity tosses by Merkley and field goal by Smith with two seconds left, which made the final score: Uintah, 38 and Carbon, 32. Abegglen was the top scorer for Uintah with ten points on four field ' goals and two free throws. Rhodes had eight points on two field goals and four free throws. Also scoring points for Uintah were: Smith, 6; Merkley, 4; Jorgensen. 4; Murray. 2; Merrell. 2 and Mott, 2. Uintah hit 10 out of 22 free throws and connected on 14 field goals. Hamilton and Poulous were the top Carbon scorers with nine points each and Borla scored six points. Judy Giardano and Jenny Miller added four points each. Union High School nipped Altamont in overtime, 31 to 30, in the first game in the tournament. The game was tied up at 26-26 after four quarters of action. Lori Powell connected on a field goal and a free throw, and Diane Hicken popped in a field goal in the overtime period for Union. Altamont's Sabra Barton and Sally Bird put in one field goal each in the overtime period. Hicken was the top scorer for Union with ten points on five field goals. Also scoring points for Union were Cindy Anderson, 6; Karmin Eldredge, 6; Powell, 5: Beth Slaugh, 2 and Percel Cesspooch, 2. Bird was the top scorer for the Altamont crew with 11 points on four field goals and three free throws.
