Panthers drop one point heartbreaker The Vernal Junior High Panthers' Gary Swim fired in the first free throw, but he missed the second one and Roosevelt nabbed the rebound with ten seconds left in the game and won the encounter with Vernal in Roosevelt, 44 to 43, on Nov. 26. "The game was really close. Lloyd Merkley had a good game. He poured in 22 points and hit a lot of outside shots, stole the ball and scored on layups. We are going to have to get a little tougher for the next one with Roosevelt," said Vernal Junior High basketball coach, Craig Monsen. i Merkley scored 22 points on nine field goals and four free throws. Also scoring points for Vernal were: Swim, 9; Lewis, 4 ; KurtRobb, 4 ; Kelly Sorensen, 2 and Jim Hamilton, 2. Vernal put in 16 field goals and connected on 11 out of 24 free throws. The top scorer for Roosevelt was Ross with 13 points. Also scoring points for Roosevelt were: Adams, 8; Mortensen, 6; Neilsen, 6; Winward, 6; Hall, 4 and Willsen, 1. Roosevelt popped in 21 field goals and hit 2 out of 19 free throws. Merkley fired in nine points on four field goals and one free throw and Robb put in two free throws, but Mortensen tossed in three field goals and Hall, Ross and Winward added field goals to give Roosevelt a 12 to 11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Hamilton, Lewis, Swim and Sorensen poured in field goals and Merkley, Robb connected on free throw attempts and Roosevelt scored six points on field goals by Hall and Ross and free throws by Willsen and Ross to make the score at the end of the second quarter, Vernal, 22 and Roosevelt, 18. Adams scored four points on two field goals and Ross, Winward added field goals and Merkley, Swim scored field goals for Vernal in the third quarter. The score was tied at 26 points after three quarters. Neilsen and Ross fired in three field goals each. Adams tossed in two two pointers and Winward scored one field goal for Roosevelt in the fourth quarter. Merkley burned the hoop for nine points in the fourth quarter on four field goals and one free throw. Swim scored five points on two field goals and a free throw and Robb, Lewis put in free throws, but Vernal was one point short as Roosevelt won the game by the score of 44-43. Vernal will ,take on Duchesne in Vernal at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and will battle West on the road, Dec. 11. The Panthers will host Altamont on Jan. 8 and will compete in the San Rafael Tournament on Jan. 10. |
