USU Professor Nels Carlson -commercial booking agent Nels Carlson was born in Roosevelt Dec. 27, 1945 to Thure and Lillian Carlson. Thure Carlson is from Sweden and his wife, Lillian was born and raised in Salt Lake City. Nels is one of three humanities professors with Utah State University at the Vernal and Roosevelt locations. He has completed his Associates Degree at Dixie College in St. George, his BS degree at Weber State and his Master of fine arts at Utah State University. Nels has been teaching college level courses with. USU in the Basin area for five and one half years. He has produced over 18 theatre productions including "Barefoot In The Park," and "The King and I". After organizing many ideas in his head, Nels put together a side interest, apart from his teaching of a schedule of dinner theaters and concerts for the Uintah Basin. Nels books top dinner theaters and dinner concerts through sub-contracting to USU Fine Arts Council and the Roosevelt Fine Arts Council. Nels is also responsible for organizing and directing the booking and productions at the Ute Bottle Hollow Inn and Resort in Ft. Duchesne through Bottle Hollow's manager, Roger Burns and the resort's director and public relations person, Randy Werner. Nels is also the personal manager to i such well known acts (when they are in Utah) as Cher Hendricks from Salt Lake City and Alexander Longrifle of Alhambra, Calif. When booking these artists in Utah, Nels also sets up bookings for Hendricks and Longrifle in Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado. The most recent dinner concert which Nels directed was the presentation presen-tation of Alexander Longrifle at the Ute Bottle Hollw Inn and Resort Nov. 27-30. Longrifle is a well known star not only on stage but in community service on a national level as well. Alexander Cruz Longrifle was born Sept. 18, 1950 in Winslow, Ariz. He began singing at the age of 8. He mastered the guitar at 13 years of age and played his first professional appearence in 1967 for the VFW and Armed Forces in the Canal Zone. Longrifle not only performs for American Indian programs, cultural events, charity benefits, telethons for handicapped children, the YMCA, The Lions Club, and the City of Hope organizations, but he is a very personal part of each community service he dedicates himself to; not just performing per-forming but being privately involved to the capacity that his very limited time affords. Longrifles credits are numerous from both his performing status as well as his public service capitulation. He is a virtuoso musician on literally any instrument. In 1979 he had the privilege to be one of the assisting persons conferring to Jay Silverheels the "Star" award in the "Walk of Fame" ceremonies. Longrifle was selected by the Tournament of Roses parade committee to ride on the first Indian float ever to be presented in the parade; the Rand-McNally, "Cherokee" float was selected as the "lead" float which was a great honor for Longrifle. Longrifle has performed with such famous artists as Fabian in the motion picture, "Disco Fever," and has entertained for such persons as Jonathan Winters, Iron Eyes Cody, Captain and Tennile, and Will Sampson of TV's "Vegas" fame. Longrifle has also accomplished the degree of five carrying the dignity of Black Belt in Fung Fu. iongrille will be in the 1981 Tournament Tour-nament of Koses Parade to be aired Jan. 1,-1981. He will return to Bottle Hollow Resort in the Spring of 19B1 for a return dinner concert -engagement.'"- ' Sharing the stage with Longrifle were his drummer, Tary Duarte, and the groups' keyboard player, Susie Hanson. Han-son. Duarte was born in 1947 in Los Angeles. He began playing music 20 years ago and stepped to the ranks of professional in 1964. Duarte is an accomplished ac-complished musician on percussion, bass, piano, and trumpet. He has performed with the Dick Clark Production company, Fabian from 1975-77 and in 1974 managed his own group entitled "The Music Factory." Susie Hanson was born in Glendale, Calif., in 1957. She has been playing music for 11 years and engaged in a professional musicial career 3 years ago. Nels Carlson will be teaching theater history, introduction to theater, and speech communications during the winter session at the USU campus in Roosevelt. |
