W 1 UINTAH HIGH SCHOOL girls' varsity basketball team captured first place in the Uintah Tournament, Tourna-ment, Saturday. Heidi Vernal Panthers defeat Roosevelt Vernal Junior High Girls' basketball team opened the season with a 23 to 18 victory over the Rough Riders in Roosevelt on Nov. 26. The Panthers have a 1-0 record and will host Duchesne, Thursday at 4 p.m. and will battle Rock Springs on the road, Friday. The Panthers jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter on field goals by Kim Drollinger and Lena Cody. Sharyl Neal, Tia Liebhardt and Cody put in field goals, but Roosevelt scored eight points to tie up the game at 10-10 after two quarters. Green and back row, Becky Cochran, assistant coach, Heather Caldwell, Lynnette Merrell, Pen-nie Pen-nie Murray, Lisa Jorgensen, Susie Feltch, Rhonda Rhon-da Rhodes, Teresa Smith, Chris Mott, and LoaKay Bowthorpe, head coach. Liebhardt and Drollinger fired in two field goals each in the third quarter and Vernal had a 21 to 12 lead after three quarters. Vernal added two more points in the fourth quarter to make the final score: Vernal, 23 and Roosevelt, 18. Liebhardt and Drollinger were the top scorers for Vernal with eight points. Cody scored four points and Neal added three points. "We had more shots than the score indicates, but they just wouldn't fall in," said Vernal Junior High hoop coach, Louise Murch. Other games on the Vernal schedule are: Vernal at West, Dec. 11: Canyonview at Vernal, Dec. 18; Altamont at Vernal. Jan. 8; Roosevelt at Vernal, Jan. 15: Vernal at Duchesne, Jan. 22; West at Vernal, Jan. 29; Vernal at Altamont, Feb. 12 and tournament at Roosevelt, Feb. 18-19.
