V A twelve point explosion by Mike Johnson, which featured two three-point three-point plays, enabled the Uintah Utes to take a five point lead of 26 to 21 with four minutes left in the second quarter, but the Union Cougars overcame the Uintah advantage to win the encounter in Roosevelt by the score of 60 to 55 on Nov. 26. The game was tied twice at 2-2 and 4-4 early in the first quarter, but then Uintah's shooting turned cold and the Union crew blazed the hoop as they scored ten straight points for a 14 to 4 lead. Jerry Kulland swished the net for four field goals and Ronnie Gates stole the ball and popped it in the hoop for a field goal during the ten point uprising by the Cats. Uintah's Roger Walker put in a field goal to cut Union's lead to eight points, but Danny Rawlings and Gates connected con-nected on free throws to give the Cougars' a 17 to 6 advantage. The Utes scored six straight points on field goals by Walker and Scott Peterson and two charity tosses by Johnson to narrow Union's lead to five points, 17 to 12, with 47 seconds left. Kulland put in his fifth field goal in the quarter to give the Cats a 19 to 12 lead after one quarter of action. Kulland of Union and Walker of Uintah were the shooters with the hot hand in the first quarter. Kulland popped in six field goals, but his final field goal was gained about a second after the first quarter buzzer sounded. Walker put in four field goals. However, Johnson was the hot shooter in the second quarter as he scored 12 points on five field goals and two free throws in four minutes. Johnson quickly erased Union's seven point advantage as he popped the ball through the hoop for three field goals and a charity toss. The successful shot from the foul line gave Johnson a three-point three-point play and tied up the game at 19-19 with 6:12 left in the first half. Walker gave Uintah its first lead in the ball game when he stole the ball and put it in the hoop for two points and a 21 to 19 lead at the 6:06 mark. Turnovers plagued both teams in the third quarter as Union Cougars stole the ball from the Utes and the Uintah crew ripped off the ball from the Cats. Hirschi popped in a field goal for the Cats, but Peterson of Uintah connected on a shot to tie up the game. Kulland and Rawlings knocked the ball through the hoop for a four point Union lead of 36 to 32. Drollinger hit one out of two free throws and burned the net with a shot at the 40 second mark, which narrowed Union's lead to three points. Allen was unable to handle a pass under the Uintah basket as the ball went out of bounds with ten seconds left in the game.
