Show Three Cougars score in double figures, but lose contest The Union Cougars were only behind by five points, 45 to 40, after two quarters of action, but a third quarter drought enabled the defending state champions from Richfield to defeat the Cougars in Roosevelt, Saturday by the score of 82 to 69. Richfield jumped out to a 20 to 13 lead in the first quarter, but Union outscored the Wildcats, 27 to 25, in the second quarter. Jerry Kulland scored six points in the second quarter and Cory Dye, Danny Rawlings put in five points in the second quarter. The Wildcats scored 25 points in the third quarter and held Union to 11 points to take a 70 to 51 lead. Union scored 18 points and Richfield put in 12 points in the fourth quarter to make the final score: Richfield, 82 and Union, 69. Union had three caters in double figures. Dye scored 13 points and Len Frandsen, Ronnie Gates scored 11 points. Also scoring points in the game for Union were: Rawlings, 9; Kulland, 8; Karl Hirschi, 6; Greg Bellon, 6 and Steve Robb, 6. Union put in 22 field goals and high 25 out of 34 free throws. Richfield 's top scorer was Jorgensen with 17 points. Jorgensen didn't enter the game until the second quarter. Brown put in 13 points. "We are starting to balance out the scoring. The kids are playing a lot together. We had a real bad third quarter in the game with Richfield. We missed some free throws and layups. Richfield was hotter than a firecracker in the third quarter. We had the momentum in the second quarter, but Richfield regained it in the third quarter," said Brad Monks, Union High School basketball coach. "Dye came off the bench and scored 13 points. We started Frandsen and he played a fine game." Union will take, on Duchesne at 5:30 p.m. in the Basin Tournament at Uintah Hgh School. Uintah will battle Altamont. "Duchesne has a tough team this year. They have some starters back from last year. Tal Fabrizio is a fine ball player, who had a scoring average in the high twentys last year. They also have Trent Grant, Hanberg and Ohms back." said Monks. |
