Show Utes look or leadership from senior beisfxetf b Hers The 1980-81 version of the Uintah Ute varsity basketball crew is a young team, which contains five juniors, three sophomore and three seniors. The seniors on the Uintah Varsity team are Scott Peterson, Dave Allen and Gary Watkins. Uintah High School hoop coach, Pete Rencher, is looking for leadership from his three seniors. ' "We played a lot better against f Union. (Uintah lost to Union by five points, 60 to 55 on Nov. 26 and was downed by Lehi, 88-68.) The seniors are supposed toshow leadership and we are supposed to help our young players learn as fast as they can. We would have done better in the game with Union if three of our starters (Mike Johnson, Roger Walker and Peterson) had not fouled out. We did some dumb things toward the end of the game with Union. We try to help each other out and pick them up when they are down in ' the dumps. Uintah will be back," stated Scott Peterson. Another senior, Dave Allen missed some of the first basketball practices due to a case of broken ribs. "I got thrown out of a jeep and I broke some ribs. They (the ribs) are supposed to be healed but they hurt a bit. The Uintah-Union Uintah-Union game was a good close game. I 3 just try to get out there and put some points in," said Allen. The Utes' third senior is Gary Watkins, who saw action last year on Uintah's junior varsity team. "We (Uintah) need to work a lot harder. We 1 all have to hustle, and we need our fans to back us. They have to start believing ; in us. Some of the fans are behind us, but some aren't and they might as well move to Union. The cheerleaders are behind us 100 percent. Teamwork is what we have to have one for all and all for one," said Watkia; I Uintah was hurt by the full court J press in losses to Union and Lehi. "We I have to work a lot on the press. That is 1 the only thing that really hurt us in the j game with Union. If we can improve on 1 that we will beat Union the next time 1 we meet them," said Devin Wright, a I junior member of Uintah's basketball 1 team. i The Uintah Utes' top scorer in its 1 games against Union, Lehi and 1 Bountiful was 6'3" center, Mike s Johnson. Johnson turned in an even better game when he scored 32 points in the Utes' second battle of the year against Lehi. Johnson hit 13 field goals and put in six free throws. Johnson was the Utes' top scorer in the game with Bountiful at ten points. "I couldn't have scored 32 points without the excellent passes I received. I had a few feeds from Peterson and Wright. We played good defense at times in the loss to Lehi, but their fast break killed us. If we didn't have good teamwork, I wouldn't have scored 32 points," said Johnson. K.:'S v" I v' ;.
