The question many consumers are asking today is "What can I do?" It's toll free. If it is easier, contact Michael Harrison, Uintah Basin's CPSC Officer, at 789-0472 or 722-2269. Your voice counts, and you can help the Commission Com-mission make consumer products safer. Once the Commission receives a complaint, the various offices of the agency move into action. Local Commission officers obtain samples of the product for evaluation and testing by the Directorate for Engineering and Science. The epidemiologists reach into the computer for any records of injuries in-juries associated with that particular product or hazard. If Commission officials decide that the produce presents a substantial product hazard, the manufacturer is informed. The manufacturer may be expected to notify all purchasers, to repair or replace the product, to refund the purchase price, or even to remove the product from the market place. If measures are not take immediately to correct the defect, the Commission has the legal authority to take appropriate regulatory steps. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission was activated on May 14, 1973, with tremendous responsibilities for protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury associated with consumer products. Toys, flammable flam-mable fabrics, child-resistant safety closures, warning labels on hazardous household chemicals, bicycles, swimming pool slides, architectural glass and aerosol sprays are just a few of the products which have received the early attention of the Commission. But we can't do it alone, we need your help to make consumer products safer. |
