Show Hawks improve first place record to 4-0 The Hawks remained unbeaten in Bantam League action at the National Guard Armory in Vernal when they toppled top-pled the Dinos, 44 to 21, Thursday. The Hawks are in first place with a 4-0 record. Alec Clark fired in four field goals, Mike Lance popped in two and David Merino fired in one to give the Hawks a 14 to 4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Dinos cut the Hawks' lead 18 to 14 in the second quarter on six points by Corey Clark on three field goals and four points by Nelson White. However, the Hawks leaped out to a 17-point lead, 33-16, in the third quarter when they pumped in 15 points as compared com-pared to two by the Dinos. Mike Lance and Brant Ruesink tossed in three field goals each and Corwyn Taylor put in three points for the Hawks. The Hawks added 11 more points in the fourth quarter to win the game by the score of 44 to 21. Alec Clark was the top scorer for the Hawks with 13 points. Mike Lance fired in 12 points. Also scoring points for the Hawks were Brant Ruesink, 8; Timothy Paugh, 4; David Merino, 4 and Corwyn Taylor, 3. The Hawks put in 2 out of 7 free throws. Scoring points for the Dinos were Corey Clark, 6; Karl Slade, 6; Nelson White, 4; Kam Pope, 3 and David Richens, 2. The Dinos hit 5 out of 11 free throws. The Mites stayed in second place at 3 wins and 1 loss due to a 30 to 11 victory of the Bugs, Thursday. The Mites scored all the points in the first half. Derick Adams and Seth Norwood put in field goals for a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and Darren Wilde put in two field goals, Adams scored a two-pointer and Valton Mortensen converted one free throw for an 11-0 Mite lead after two quarters. Robert Drollinger and Manuel Sisneros popped in field goals for the Bugs in the third quarter, but the Mites fired in nine points for a 20-4 advantage. The Mites scored ten points and the Mites flipped in seven points in the fourth quarter to make the final score, Mites, 30 and Bugs, 11. Darren Wilde, 10 and Seth Norwood, 9, were the top scorers for the Mites. Also scoring counters were Derick Adams, 4; Valton Mortensen, 3; Blair Ewell, 2 and Matthew Sunkees, 2. The Mites connected on 2 out of 7 free throws. Putting in points for the Bugs were Manuel Sisneros, 6; Shane Atkinson, Atkin-son, 2; Robert Drollinger, 2 and David Gurr, 1. The Bugs hit 1 out of 5 free throws. The Knats gained a !500 record of 2-2 and third place in the Bantam League when they nipped the Rams in overtime, over-time, 20 to 18. The Rams have been involved in-volved in three close encounters of the basketball kind in three straight games. They were nipped by the Bugs, 13 to 11, and they edged the Dinos, 13-12. Eric Batty, John Couture and Jerry Webb pumped in field goals in the first quarter for a 6-2 Knat lead. The Rams' Rial Chew tossed in two field goals to cut the Knats' lead 8-6 at the end of the second quarter. Scott Merkley and Rial Chew blasted the basket for two field goals each and gave the Rams a 14 to 12 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Knats put in two more points than the Rams to tie the game up at 18-18 and send it into overtime. over-time. Jerry Webb connected on a jumper to deliver a 20 to 18 overtime victory to the Knats. The top scorer for the Knats was Jerry Webb with seven points. John Couture scored six points. Also scoring points were Eric Batty, 2; Chad Bullard, 2; Ryan Remington, 2 and Shayne Merkley, 1. The Knats hit 4 out of 13 free throws. Rial Chew was the . high scorer for the Rams with ten points and Scott Merkley put in eight points. The Rams missed all six free throw attempts. The Rams, Dinos and Bugs are tied for fourth place at 1-3. Games set for Thursday are: Bugs vs. Dinos, 6 p.m.; Knats vs. Mites, 7:15 p.m. and Hawks vs. Rams, 8:30 p.m. Contests set for March 27 are: Mites vs. Rams, 6 p.m.; Bugs vs. Hawks, 7:15 p.m. and Knats vs. Dinos 8:30 p.m. The Vernal unit of the Utah National Guard will have an open house on April 12. Bantam League games, which were scheduled for April 10, will be moved to April 12 at 1 p.m. 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. |
