Ctfs bleasf Wascrtch Wasps, 57 to 0 in 2-A fournainnerrf The Union Cougars were the victims of a 20-5 uprising by the Richfield Wildcats in the fourth quarter, which produced a 73 to 47 Richfield win, Thursday, but on Friday the Union Cougars were on the winning side of a massacre as they blasted Wasatch, 57 to 40. Wasatch defeated Union, twice, during region action and pocketed first place in Region Nine, but the Cats stung the Wasps for a 57-40 win, which placed them in the consolation championship game. Union jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the first quarter and had a 22 to 15 lead at the end of the second quarter. The Cougars increased their advantage to ten points, 41 to 31 at the end of the third quarter. Union fired in 19 points and Wasatch put in 9 counters in the fourth quarter. The top scorer in the game for Union was Clay Harrison with 19 points. He fired in five field goals and was 9 for 9 from the foul line. Kary Eldredge flipped in 12 points on three field goals and six free throws. He hit 6 out of 10 charity tosses. Also scoring points for Union were Tracy Dye, 8; Kyle Mansfield, Man-sfield, 8; Tracy Neilson, 6; Brandon Draper, 2 and Stephen Robb, 2. Union put in 18 field goals and hit 21 out of 34 free throws. "Kary Eldredge held Wasatch's top season scorer, Darryl Zenger, to four points in the game. Zenger averaged 25 points a game during the regular season," stated Union coach, Brad Monks. Steve Provost was the high scorer for Wasatch with 12 points. He put in two field goals and hit 8 out of 10 free throws. Also scoring counters for Wasatch were Mark Berg, 10; Lynn Bonner, 6; Blair Baird, 4; Darryl Zenger, 4; Paul Cook, 2 and Brett Farr, 2. Wasatch put in 12 field goals and hit 16 out of 21 free throws. "The win over Wasatch was a super game. We controlled the ball. We used a diamond zone and Kary Eldredge played Darryl Zenger man to man. Defense was the key to the game. We did a good job of shooting," stated Monks. Wasatch was cold from the field. Richfield put in the first six points and had a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter in the first round game against Union, Thursday in Provo. Union outscored Richfield, 19 to 16, to cut the Wildcats' lead to 36 to 27 after two quarters of action. The Cats cut Richfield's advantage to six points, but the Wildcats put in five points for a 53-42 53-42 lead. Richfield exploded for 20 points and held Union to five points in the fourth quarter to make the final score: Richfield, 73 and Union, 47. "We couldn't make Richfield play our game. They jumped out to a quick lead and they controlled the tempo. We had first game jitters," said Monks. The top scorer for Union was Clay Harrison' with 14 points. He put in four field goals and was 6 for 10 from the foul line. Also scoring points for Union were Stephen Robb, 11; Tracy Dye, 6; Steve Ferguson, 6; Tracy Neilson, 4; Brandon Draper, 4 and Kary Eldredge, 2. Union put in 16 field goals and hit 15 out of 32 free throws. Steve Hubbard, 23 and Kirk Pendleton, Pen-dleton, 22, were the top scorers for Richfield. Also scoring counters for Richfield were Sandy Jorgensen, 4; Kris Poulson, 4; Tom Brown, 3; Steve Cartwright, 3 and Layne Larson, 2. Richfield fired in 25 field goals and hit 23 out of 42 free throws. |
