Show This ee vso HouUi like to devote our column to Moab's "Mrs. C,'iv Scoiiter" and acquaint vou ith some of this remarkable remark-able woman's accomplishments. accomp-lishments. Melon Taylor is our No. 1 Girl Scout in Moab. Helen has worn manv different community hats over fhe years. Her Girl Scout hat was put on in 1947 when her daughter Suzanne was in the first Girl Scout troop to be ors.uiuod. by Doric Melich. Me-lich. in Moab, Troop No. 1. This was Known as a lone" troop. At that time there was no I'tah Girl Scout Council andall supplies, sup-plies, badges, information, informa-tion, etc.. had to come from New York. Helen says many people do not realize just how hard it as to be a lone troop and how great it is now to have the support and supplies and training av-- av-- ailable from our Council in Salt Lake City. Helen attended Sullins College for one year in ; Bristol. Virginia and two " years ai Colorado l ni-Versity ni-Versity in Boulder, In . 192$ she married Lester Taylor. They have four grown children, D.L. and Joe. Moab area cattle ranchers; Jeff, recently-admitted recently-admitted to the I'tah Bar Assn. and living in Salt Lake City and Suzanne .Mrs. L. L. Bap-.. tist Church and sings in the choir. Over the past years Helen has opened "her home to the troops to , ... Ci Mrs. Helen Taylor help on the Hospitality Badge, the purpose iif which is to learn how to bo an even better friend, a courteous guest and a thoughtful hostess, and will again do this after af-ter the first of the year. Over the past 26 years her positions have been many and were very impressive im-pressive to this writer. She started out as Ttood Committee member. Troop Consultant, i roop Organizer. Assistant and Senior Troop Leader for two years. She was on a committee during the development de-velopment of the I'tah Girl Scout Council which began be-gan in 1961, on the Selections Se-lections Committee to heb select girls for National Na-tional Opportunities, ins-trict ins-trict 7 Chairman for one term and on the State Trainer list. She has served ser-ved with the Girl Scout Community Fund Drive for three years and at present is the Commun- U.v Kepresentative for I'tah State which is on the public relations side. Does that sound like a lot of committees? It was, and that meant many hours of unpaid volunteer work to help the girls in the community. The year 19 5 8 was an exciting and interesting one when Doric Melich took her troop jind Helen Taylor as her assistant and chaperone to 20 girls in their own bus to "Our Cabana" near Cuernava-ca, Cuernava-ca, Mexico which is one of four Girl Scout World Centers and the only one in the western hemisphere. hemi-sphere. Helen says it was a thrilling trip and manv people were amazed that such a small town as Moab was able to send -0 girls on such a trip when many of the larger cities were only sending 8 or 11). This was possible, pos-sible, in part, due to the support the Moab community com-munity gave the girls whenever they had a money mo-ney raising project for their trip. Sometimes it takes two or three years of planning and projects to get the money for a trip like this, and she said Moab has always been so good to be De-hind De-hind the girls for their projects. At the Annual District meeting in 1'rovo in 1964 Helen was presented the "Thanks" badge which is the highest adult honor in Girl Scouting. Since that time she has still devoted countless hours j to the yourh of the com-v com-v munity. One never seems j to retire from Girl Scout-i Scout-i ing. once you wear the ; green hat and uniform, ! your talents and skills are ' always in demand for bad-5 bad-5 ge work, organization or s commiiiees and Helen has j given of her time uncom-j uncom-j plainingly. Several times , during our interview she j mentioned that she felt j her rold had only been ' supportive and that Dorie - Melich had been the dri-i dri-i ving force behind the Girl 3 Scouts and wanted me to j be sure and mention that it was Dorie that got all 5 these things done. We do -1 know Dorie was a great j worker too, but this is i Helen's day and although J she feels she has only - played a supporting role .! wewould like to give her a public thanks for all 3 her support during the i years. If we had more 1 people, today, who would 1 give of their time and talents, voluntarily, we i wouldn't ever have to ask for help, but sad to say, we do and are still in - need in trjis area for lea-' lea-' ders and assistants. - From the Moab Neigh - borhood Girl Scouts we - would like to give Heler " Taylor not only our thanks H but our appreciation ol P her many hours of worh r- for us over the past 2C t years. We feel she is r the perfect one to teacl t the girls about hospital-P hospital-P ity, she is such a grac-t grac-t ious and thoughtful ladj and a very good friend t( Jl the Girl Scouts. |
