Show Road-Drilling Project Stopped Stopped bv Court Order i Construction of a road and drilling of an exploratory expl-oratory oil well within Glen Canyon National Recreation Re-creation Area was stopped stop-ped Tuesday by Judge Al-don Al-don J. Anderson, U. S. District Court for Utah. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the temporary tem-porary restraining order issued stops Trans Delta Oil and Gas Corp., Denver, Den-ver, from building the road or drilling the well, to be located 35 miles southeast of Escalante . The order is effective for 10 days. The order came after a civil suit was filed Monday Mon-day by June Viavant, national na-tional secretary and member of the board of directors, Sierr Club. Salt Lake City; and" Ruth Frear, chairman, Uinta chapter of the organization. organiz-ation. The action names Rogers Ro-gers C. B. The action contends the defendants have failed to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires preparation pre-paration of an environmental environ-mental impact statement for the road and that Congress has asked that the Glen Canyon Recreation Recrea-tion Area be considered for designation as a wilderness wil-derness area and that development de-velopment in the area is inconsistent with this goal. The suit contends that the construction of the road, to be used to tran sport a well drilling rig, would "degrade the aesthetic aes-thetic qualities of the area, ar-ea, leave significant signs of man's presence and industrial in-dustrial development and otherwise alter and irreparably ir-reparably damage the environment." en-vironment." The road, the action alleges, al-leges, would also deprive m the plaintiffs and others of the beneficial use of the area. The suit asks the court to declare that the government gov-ernment defendants failed to prepare an environmental envir-onmental impact statement state-ment on the road and that they, be ordered to prepare pre-pare one.
