I ' Among the pitiful sights attending the bombing of Warsaw by German planes wu the picture of this boy with his pet canary, the only thing saved from the ruins of his home. Ten people were killed by a bomb at this place in the center of Warsaw near the Danzig station, according to Julien Bryan, last American Amer-ican to leave the capital. Almost before their eyes were open, these babiea were rushed . into the basement of a large women's hospital in Warsaw, there to lie with their mothers who wept and prayed their lives might be spared from German bombs. - None of these babies was more than 10 days old when this picture was taken. Only the wall of the building was left standing from another direct hit of a heavy bomb during the long siege. ti . This woman lived across from one of the largest women's hospital hos-pital in Warsaw. A German bomb struck her home. She was wounded and rushed to the maternity ward temporarily set up in the hospital. Here she lies with agony written oh her face as a nurse applies bandages. Hospitals also were not safe. One outside of Warsaw was hit by live bombs. |
