Show Texans Outslicker Their Foes With Their Uncertain Workout By Rl'SSF.LL J. NEWLAND SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 20 (AP) This is as good a time as any to tell how our University of San Francisco football team was outslickered by the boys from St. Mary's university of San Antonio. . The Texans won the game, 7-g. last Sunday and reverberations from the upset are still ringing in the ears of the local lads. Coach Mose Simms and his drawling gang rolled into town in their private bus last Thursday. Mose made Inquiries about a secret practice field, then hustled his charges Into the Civic square which forms a front yard for the citv hall. While several hundred idlers, as well as scouts from U. S. F., looked on, Coach Simms sent his players through their chores. It was the most awful display of football maneuvering ma-neuvering this writer has watched. In other words, the Texans looked terrible. They stumbled over each other's feet, got tangled tan-gled In their own legs, tried to catch passes with their heads and ran plays in which nobody packed the ball the center having snapped it back into space. Red Chisholm, athletic manager of U. S. F., attended the workout. When it ended he shook his head and remarked dismally: "It looks like we will have to ease up on these boys to make It any kind of a game." Mose Simms helped strengthen his own case with a fair country brand of early season moaning. Sadly he said to Chisholm: "It looks like you got us. this time. Why, most of those boys of mine don't even own a razor. Look at the peach fuzz on their faces. Give us a break and tell me what kind of formations you're going to run your plays off this year." ChlshoLn confided San Francisco was using the same system as last year when it swamped St. Mary's, 31-0. Sunday came, as usual, and with it a Su Mary's team which, to the consternation of the San Franciscans, actually knew how to play football. The Texans just about ran the pants off the locals. lo-cals. They played better, faster and harder football than the San Francisco team. . |
