Sept. 20 MS Negotiations Ne-gotiations between shipowners and the National Maritime union reached an apparent Impasse today to-day over the question of seamen's war bonus when the operators insisted in-sisted that ships now tied up by strike sail Immediately pending settlement of the controversy. Frank J. Taylor, president of the American Merchant Marine institute, insti-tute, said after conferring with operators, op-erators, that "the ships now tied up must sail before they (the ship owners) resume conferences." Joseph Curran, president of the N M U, said: t 'The union Is powerless to go before the crews and get the shins sailing because the union did this a week ago on the promise that the operators would sit down and negotiate when the ships sailed. The men took the ships out and (he operators then refused to negotiate." nego-tiate." Taylor said all Interested groups were making every effort to effect ef-fect an adjustment that would release re-lease seven vessels now held up here. The six-day-old strike had ex-tended ex-tended to the U. S. liner Washingtonone Wash-ingtonone of the largest vessels engaged in returning stranded Americana from Europe. |
