Three august scientists, seated at a table In th modest home of Sir James Young Simpson, Scottish doctor and personal surgeon to Queen Victoria, clicked glasses and Inhaled from them deeply. In a moment th three men were hilarious. Their conversation became disjointed. Then, one by one, they slumped In their chair insensible! insen-sible! The year was 184T and th liquid In th glasses was chloroform. It was th first public experiment In which chloroform was used as an anaesthesia. Simpson, who held the position of Professor of Midwifery at Edlngburgh university, had become Interested In the development of anaesthetic through report from America of th us of sulphuric other. His work in this line won him In 1894 the Monthyon prlt of th French Academy of Science and membership In nearly every existing exist-ing American and European medical society.
