Better Forecasts to Aid Mountain Region Flights New $500,000 Fund Permits Additional Safeguards, Weather Ace Reveals Two meteorologists, recognized as world experts, testified at a federal inquiry Thursday into causes that sent a United Air Lines Mainline to its doom October 17. They are D. M. Little, Washington, Washing-ton, D. C, chief of the serological division of the United States weather weath-er bureau, and C F. Van Thullenar, Salt Lake City, associate meteorologist meteorol-ogist of the United States aerologies aerologi-es I division of ths bureau. Promiss of more accurst weather weath-er forecasts in mountains came from Mr. Little, while Mr. Van Thullenar reminisced on his recent experience as forecaster near the north pole during the search for the lost Russian arctic aviators. Mr. Van Thullenar, stationed at Salt Lsks City, was sent to Fairbanks, Fair-banks, Alaska, in August to forecast fore-cast weather conditions for Sir Hubert Wilklns and a Russian flier, who were searching for th plan lost during a projected flight from Moscow across the pole to the United Unit-ed Ststea. "It was an experience TH never forget." said Mr. Van Thullenar. "We had to forecast conditions for Be hours in sdvance over an area 1750 mile long, with no weather-checking weather-checking stations In between." The only reports available, he said, came from the Siberian coast by way of Moscow and Washington, Washing-ton, D. C. the settlement of Copper Mine in Canadian Yukon territory and their own station at Fairbanks. Mr. Little said that a $300,000 congressional appropriation for the aerologlcal division is resulting in additions of three men each to weather bureau station personnel in this area, purchase of ceiling projectors to measure ceilings up to 10.000 feet (present measurement measure-ment go only to 3000 and 4000 feet) and the addition of inspectors to travel in the mountainous areas and train weather observers at isolated iso-lated spot. Mr. Little ssid also that forecasts of weather in the upper air as high a 1(000 feet will be possible and I fairly reliable under the new system. |
