Show French Accuse Mussolini Of Inciting Islam Unrest " . By DEWITT MACKENZIE Associated Pre Writer Mussolini is being accused by some French authorities of inciting in-citing Mohammedans in the neareast to rise against their European masters. T This sweeping allegation gesw out of tha present native disorders I In French northern Africa, and the blase of Arabian unrest In Palestine and Syria . II dues has stolen so many Jackpots Jack-pots from his opponents that they may have reason to be suspicious of him In-fact, he rstherasfied for trouble when with a fanfare he proclaimed himself "protector " of Islam" during a tour of Italian Lybia not long ago. One needn't put it beyond the Roman chief to stir up a spot of bother for either France or Britain in the Mediterranean area, which he would like to control. He served them worse than that when he grabbed Ethiopia. The idea that he would even contemplate con-template doing anything that might precipitate a general Mohammedan uprising, however, is so fantastic as to challenge the imagination. Indeed, In-deed, there are several mighty good reasons why he shouldn't do any such thing. The most moving argument is Ih.t rT.l P.n.lil.mif movement probably would njean a holy war, or Jihad, than which there is noth- ing more awful a slaughter of unbelievers un-believers by Mohammedans. Whatever What-ever else one may think about Mussolini, Mus-solini, surely it is beyond the realm of reason to suggest that he would be mixed up with anything like that. Again, he would be. so to spesk, cutting his own throat, since he would be endangering the Italian holdings in Africa. Mohammedans would be no respecters of the persons per-sons of Italian unbelievers, even though Mussolini is "protector of Islam." Many of ths natives In Italian possessions are Mohammedans. Ethiopia is msinly Christian, but, curiously enough, there Is an unbreakable un-breakable affinity between the Ethiopians Ethi-opians and ths Moslems. This dates back 13 centuries to the time when ths ancient kingdom of Ethiopia tmvi ataunrhlv bv th. Drooret Mo- hammed while he was persecuted by enemies. An equally convincing point Is that the Pan-Islamic movement, which is not only religious but racial (Arabian), is almost as old as Islam Itself, and ths dream of an all-inclusive Arsblsn nationalism national-ism is older aven than that. Since the end-of the World war the question ques-tion of Arabian unity has been a flaming torch against the French, British and Italian colonial structures struc-tures In thst psrt of the world. The Arabian-Jewish troubles tn Palestine, which are pestering ths British, the Moslem difficulties in Syria under the French, are part and parrel of the drive for Arabian nationalism. Possibly the disorders in northern Africa are. too. though soms colonials claim that they have been caused by the governmental policy of the French themselves. Ths Arabs, fierce in their love of liberty, project an independent federation of all the Arabian atates. These would include Palestine (and probably mean the end of a Jewish national horns), Irsq and Syria, among others. This ststs would cover about a million and a half square miles, with a population of perhaps 12 000.000. Mussolini isn't going to stir up thess primitive fighters. Hs is too wise. |
