By BRUCE CATTON (Copyright, 1937. for The Salt Lake Telegram) TORONTO, Ont, Nov. 4 The Dionne quintuplet! have never been apanked and they never will be apanked. Nevertheless, they are aubject to atrlct discipline and, aa result, are pretty obedient and well-behaved young ladies. Since they wer a year old the quints have been Uught that they have to obey OR ELSE. More than that: they have learned that they can get what they want only by obeying, and that If they refuse to follow the routine laid down for them they Invariably have to take the consequence, v - These "consequences" are never so very terrible. The worst that happen to a disobedient quint Is a spell of Isolation in a separate room. But because thla aystem has worked so well on the quints, it might be worth the attention of parents who are wondering how on earth they can aver get Junior to mind. Nobody worried about discipline when the quints were tiny, of couree. Everyone waa1 too busy with the all-Important job of keeping them alive. But as tha sisters passed the crisis, tha guardians faced the problem prob-lem of Installing the proper routine of child-training. Happy Medium Tha object of tha training program pro-gram waa not to develop children who never disobey, but to reach a happy balance between obedience and disobedience. Aa tha psychologist psycholo-gist put it "w believe an individual indi-vidual ahould be noncompliant but ha ahould keep hia noncompliance within tha limits of social behavior." In other word. If a quint refuses to wash her hands before dinner, she doesn't get punished or argued with ahe aimply doesn't get dinner until she washea If aha prefera going without dinner, din-ner, that her privilege. No one suffers but herself. On tha other hand, however. If she creates a disturbance during the story hour ahe la et once removed to tha Isolation room, or "doghouse": for this kind of disobedience disturbs dis-turbs tha whole group. Hence ahe is disciplined for the second kind of disobedience but not for the first That is why you will notice aome odd thing when you study the discipline records of the different quint. Nsawenfonruat Annette, for Instance, breaks the law tha most or. aa tha paycholo- this rather hard to take, and aet out at once to aee whether they had mora endurance than tha nurses. There were times when the nursery fairly rang with the sound of wailing wail-ing one child once cried for a solid hour but before long the quints found out who waa boss. After that, livings went better. In recording the quints' progress, th psychologists divided their history his-tory into two periods and a comparison com-parison of tha two la Interesting. It show that the quints behave much better now than they were behaving a year ago. The children do far less quarreling when playing together: they behave better at the table, make less fuse when going to bed. Rooa Caught Oa One Incident ahows how keen these five sisters sre about things. It happened about a year ago, when it waa discovered that mora cases of disobedience were cropping out during the outdoor play period than In any other part of the routine. Since thla period does not ordinarily produce much trouble, the psyoholo-gista psyoholo-gista were pusxled. At last they got the anawer. During tha outdoor play period, tha children, unknown to themselves, them-selves, were on display before the public. The public liked to see all five girla together. H on were absent, tourists would express doubt that there really were five of them. Hence th nurses had become re. luctant to discipline a child, through isolation, during that period. Tha quints didn't know the reason for it hut they soon caught on to tha fact that at this particular time they could break the law with impunity. im-punity. Restoration of atrlct discipline during th outdoor play period soon ended that In general, th quints play together togeth-er very well and have few quarrels. Aa In any group of children, of course, there are occasional spate but they usually end with tha two disputant aittlng down calmly and ptkying together. A healthy attitude of adventure ia being developed in the quints' play. Tha peychologista have testified testi-fied that It ia aurprising how little th quint notice the stumblings, fallings and bumping that are a part of all outdoor play for children. Dr. mats' theory ia that adults in general should interfere in such activities ac-tivities "only to prevent homicide or suicide," carefully avoiding unnecessary un-necessary interference In situation that children can eotvo for themeelvea them-eelvea Tee Early (or Results Tha quints are learning to get excellent control over their tempera, since a cardinal rule of their training train-ing routine haa been that a show of anger never get a child anything. And so, sine they have little fear, aeldom get angry and obey the rulea .as well aa s-year-olda could be expected ex-pected to obey them. It can be aeen that their training la progressing satisfactorily. How will it go In the future? The psychologists' report concludes with the words: "It ia too early to prognosticate tha development of the control of fear in these five children, because of their unusual environment At th present time the atability of their eurroundinga makea for an atmosphere of trust and confidence, but one can euggeat that very aooa these children must have an opportunity oppor-tunity of wider social experimenta- gist quaintly put it. shows the largest number of noncompliance incident And yet Annette ia disciplined dis-ciplined the least of all tha aistere. Maria ranks third in the number of noncompliance lncidenta but drawa down the most discipline. A good part of Mane's trouble ia due to tha fact that ahe ia still the baby of the group; 41 per cent of her noncompliance 4a simply crying. She offers actual physical resistance to authority less than any ef her sisters. Annette, then. Is a nonconformist who Is canny enough te break rule that don't carry a penalty. She'll say "No" but if you aay, "Oh. eome on ehe'll usually coma. Emilie. on i tha other hand, doea not aay "No" I unleaa aha means IL When ahe doea aay it aha sticks to it. , Depends I 'pea Her The advantage of the diaclpliae-by-iaolation method Is that it makea learning possible. When a quint Is isolated, sho has a chanos to con-eider con-eider whether she would rather be alone or with tha other four. The length of her isolation depanda entirely en-tirely on her. If ahe wants to spend th remainder of th play period in the isolation room, no adult interferes: inter-feres: if ahe wanta to coma back and behave, she is welcomed. When th cbild-training expert set up their routine, the first nil was "Let 'em cry." Tha quint, who were used to getting Instant attention whea they cried, found tlon if tha emotional aspect of their personalities la to be fully and adequately ade-quately developed."
