Show QUESTION OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. Harper's Weekly says: "Capital punishment by due process of law Is unpopular in this country, and would probably be abolished if the murder record were not so scandalous." But there would be a less scandalous record If it were abolished, because juries give thousands of criminals the benefit of a doubt now who would be convicted, were the punishment imprisonment for life, for behind the doubt would be the thought that if a mistake should be committed, commit-ted, it would yet be discovered and remedied, with the result re-sult that many terrible criminals would be placed where they could do no more harm. The poorest use possible for a man is to kill him. |
