Show $20,000 GOCS, TO THE WINNER Suburban Handicap On With Poor field of Eleven Starters. : .-, . ;' . , i . . . NEW YORK, June 21. The Suburban Subur-ban handicap, the blue ribbon event of the American turf, will , be run at Sheepshead bffy this afternoon. The handicap inaugurates the June meeting: meet-ing: of the Coney Island Jockey club, which will continue until' July 10. Today's race was not expected to compare with many others that have gone before. A series of casualties almost al-most unprecedented had cut the list of starters down to eleven, and of these not one was of the "class" which has made the Suburban the classic event which it baa become. Turf experts declared before the race, however, that the field for-today's mile-and-a-quarter run was remarkably re-markably evenly balanced, and there was no strongly- marked favorite. Go-Between, Go-Between, Dandelion, . Cairngorm and Astronomer all had supporters who believed they would . lead the flying column at the wire. ' ; ; - Early in the day the weather was threatening, with prospects of showers later in the day. Toward noon, however, how-ever, the sun . burned the ' mist away and it appeared . like the. race might be run under ideal conditions. The winner will carry away about $20,000 as his share of the purse. The", distance is a mile and a quarter, and the record for the race is 2:05, made by Hermis .in.1904. v - , - i - |
