Eagles were everywhere today, Flocks and droves and hordes'of them came to Salt Lake City today to participate . in the annual outing of the" Eagles' organization of Utah, It is'rimated that nearly 2000, Eagles, their wives, ; friends ' and sweethearts journeyed to Salt Lake City from nearby towns. All left this afternoon 'for the big celebration .at Lagoon, La-goon, where athletic sports of all kinds will 1)e indulged in, The Eagles' parade, which waa -a feature of the morning, was one of the best showings ever made by a fraternal frater-nal organization In this city. The red, white and bluecolors showed everywhere Jn the , parade, which started at noon today. With colors flying and bands playing, play-ing, the Eagles in uniform marched through the streets.- 1 Special trains brought the Eagles in today. At thev depots Eagles were ready to receive the visitors and took charge of .them. j s . The parade formed at Market and West Temple streets at nc-on, under the leadership of Dr. W. H. Hopkina Following the marshal of the day came a platoon of police under Sergt. John HempeL Behind the police came the State officers of the Eagles' organization organ-ization and the Eureka band. Following the Eureka band players came the members of the Eagles' lodge at that place. ' Bingham aerie No. 59, with - the Bingham band, came next. The Bingham lodge members mem-bers carried red, white and blue umbrellas. um-brellas. All the members were dressed in white duck trousers and white canvas can-vas hats. Famous Goat In line. The Salt Lake aerie, which is the host of the occasion, followed. With them was the famous goat for initiation initia-tion purposes. He had recently been In the tub and his white hair glistened like silver in the sun. His horns were tipped with gold. , So ambitious has the animal become for Initiating that it -was necessary for two persons to hold a rope on each side, of him to hold him in place. Behind this came the visiting Eagles and the Utah State band, which was secured to play for the Salt Lake City organization.! The Salt Lake City Eagles' baseball team, in blue suits and the eagle across their breast, brought up the rear ranks. The last of the parade was an automobile auto-mobile in which a huge stuffed eagle on a standard was carried. Eight Hundred In Line. The number of persons who took part in the parade was about 800. The fraters who took part in the parade were all dressed In white trousers and white capa The aids who assisted Marshal Hopkins along the line of march were A. O.- Mahan, P. J. Nelson, Nel-son, John Riley and C A. Mlddleton. The line of march of the parade was down Main street from . Market street to Second South street.' east on Second South street to State street, north on State street to First South street, east on First South street to Main street, north on Main street and a countermarch around the monument monu-ment to the Knights of Pythias hall on Main street near Third South, where the final salutation and inspection was Held... , , Reception Committee.. . The 'committee which awaited on the visitors at the Rio Grande depot this morning consisted of A. G. Mahan, George A. Whitaker. J. Arthur I Thomas. Peter H. Riley. Harry Don, T. R. Thomas. P- J. Nelson. J. N. Spalding. E. Schuler, the Rev. F. F. Eddy and Dr. A. Lewis. At the Short Line depot the follow-ing follow-ing committee met the visitors: A. Bernstein, V. J, Sowadskl, W. H. Lud-dlngton. Lud-dlngton. A. J. Peffer. D. I. Elton, Judge M. Stockman, Dr. W. W. Cook, Fred Bloomquist, C. T. Murphy and C. T. Lewis. A reception committee met the visitors vis-itors at the hall and extended to them all the courtesies that it was In their power to give. The committee was assisted by the following women: Mra W. H. Luddlngtort, Mrs. V. J. Sowadskl, Sowad-skl, Mra Hertz, Mra Peffer and Mra Halvorsen. At Lagoon this afternoon the annual outing was held. The programme for the occasion included athletlo events, swimming and dancing. The committee which had charge of the sports was composed of A. Bernstein, Bern-stein, president of the local order of Eagles, J. Arthur Thomas, Peter Riley, Don Elton, Thomas Snarr and Ray Don. The first crowd to Lagoon left on the 1 o'clock train this afternoon and the trains after that were crowded. It Is estimated that fully 4000 persons visited the resort today. Three ball games were played this afternoon. Four teams took part in the affair and played for the championship cham-pionship of the State and $25. A tug of war was also given and the goat was raffled off. There were also a number of races for young, old, fat and slim and an egg and spoon race. The homeliest Eagle on the grounds was awarded a silk umbrella. Arrangements have been made for a special train this evening to bring the picnickers back to the city. |
