Show ALL HALLOWS COLLEGE. . Salt Lake has ever held her own In the maintenance of model educational institutions, and Inferior to none of these stands All Hallows college, a school for boys. Although the college was built to meet the wants of the Catholic parents In this section of the country, by offering" them for their children, convenient access to the advantages ad-vantages of a good sound education, pupils of all religious denominations are extended the privilege of sharing the educational benefits to be received. v The Catholic church has ever shown Itself to be a true patron of learning and enlightenment, and has displayed Its proverbial wisdom in supporting and encouraging this superior school. During the twenty years of Its existence exis-tence All Hallows has made for Itself an enviable record." It has always been the aim of the college to Instill into the hearts and minds of Its pupils those I principles of integrity and true Americanism Amer-icanism that in future years will give to Salt Lake City. Utah, and the surrounding sur-rounding States, true men and honest, progressive citizens. The college maintains three higher courses: the commercial course, the scientific sci-entific course and the classical course. The commercial course is Intended to prepare students thoroughly for the t k complications of modern business life, and to give them the educational training train-ing which is necessary in order to work successfully in the feverish field of national na-tional and international competition. The scientific course has been organised organ-ised with the special view of meeting j. the wants of students who are to de li vote themselves in after life to any of the professions connected with the vast mining InduFtiies of the West. The classical course forms a special feature and is the standard course of the institution. Its object is to prepare students for medical, legal and other learned professions for which the study , of classics Is indispensable. I Besides these three advanced courses there are the minim and primary courses for beginners, and the academic academ-ic courses intended as preliminary to the higher courses. All Hallows college was founded by the Right Rev. Bishop Scanlan in 1886 j when existing circumstances made its t accomplishment a most difficult under- i taking. It was at this time that the I Catholics throughout the intermountain j States united in giving to the school l their support, and but a short time af- I terward the Institution began to grow. About three years after the founding of 1 the college the Marist Fathers, a teach ing order who regard education as one of their principal objects, assumed con-f con-f trol. The city's rapidly increasing pop- (' ulation and the wise policy of the new regime then accomplished much In the Improvement of the school, and brought . It to what it is today, an institution f i that Is credit to the State and a mon- ument to our progress. The college is ? always found to be abreast of the I times, a true center of mental and mor- I al culture. Those whose financial clr- I cumstances constrain them In their de- I sire for a liberal education may here i find their wants treated with the ut- most consideration, the cost of a thor- i ough course being merely nominal. I At a cost of fully $100,000 the school last year erected a large building with i sixty additional rooms for the accom- . modatlon of the annually increasing I number of pupils who receive instruc- ' tionliere. The study halls are spacious and cheerful, and the halls, dormitories, dormito-ries, bathrooms and dining-rooms well . ventilated and lightsome, fitted with " every modern convenience. The buildings are lighted by electricity elec-tricity and heated by steam throughout. All possible precautions against fire have been taken, each floor being provided pro-vided with hose connections and chemical chem-ical extinguishers, and fire escapes extend ex-tend from each story to the ground. Great attention is paid to atblMIr I and gymnastics, thus insuring the stu dents a physical as well as a mental training. There is a new and well equipped gymnasium with special classes daily under the supervision of a skilled trainer. Tor the gratifying results attained. great credit Is due the Very Rev. J. J. Gulnan, S. M.. president and treasurer of the 'institution. His efforts in the Interests of All Hallows college have been untiring. The Catholic church and the State of 'Utah have every reason" to feel proud of this place of learning. |
