Show Commercial Outlook Was Never Brighter BY ORSON H. HEWLETT, President Manufacturers and Merchants' Mer-chants' Association. During the last year Salt Lake had made a remarkable stride forward In the matter of securing the concerted action of all of the men who are financially Interested Inter-ested In the development and growth of the city. This "get together" movement for it has become a movement during the year-is year-is in line with a similar movement that seems to be sweeping like a tidal wave all over the country. Small manufacturers, manufactur-ers, large manufacturers, in fact all Independent Inde-pendent manufacturers, are being educated edu-cated to the fact that In organization Is their only safeguard against the life-sapplng life-sapplng methods of the great combinations combina-tions of capital that are endeavoring to gain absolute control in every branch of Industrial enterprise and throttle financially finan-cially the man or corporation that dares to compete in the lines monopolized by these combinations. These facts the producers and small investors in-vestors all over the country, from Maine to California, from Canada to the Gulf, are fast learning, and the Salt Lake "men who make things" are not behind their brothers ln other parts of the country in learning this lesson. Salt Lake City Is recognized as the natural and geographical supply center for a great are of mining and agricultural agricul-tural country surrounding It. Because of its geographical location. Salt In ke is a natural manufacturing center. cen-ter. Capitalist and manufneturers are fast learning that in the territory that would naturally look to this noint for its commodities there is a great and growing volume of trade. The manufacturers and merchants of the city, have organized the Manufacturers Manufactur-ers atid Merchants' association, which will embrace in Its membership every manufacturer manu-facturer and merchant In the State, who Is interested in the development of the latent possibilities that this State possesses. pos-sesses. In this association, the Industrial development devel-opment of the region adjacent to Salt Iake City and the entire State as well has been made the keynote of the whole organization. or-ganization. Its aim Is to bring to the attention at-tention of legitimate Investors the limitless limit-less possibilities that lie here almost absolutely abso-lutely untouched, and which, when properly prop-erly and systematically developed, will bring In immense returns In dividends. The eyes of Investors generally are upon S;. It Lake City and I'tah. as a possible field for their industrial enterprises, and before another year has passed the smoke will roll from more than one fac-tery fac-tery that will be new to Salt Lake. There are on deposit in the banks of Salt Lake Citv and the State at large at this time millions of dollars which are waiting wait-ing to he loaned to legitimate investors. .The rates of Interest are ns low as they are In almost any part of the country, being be-ing only one-half of 1 per cent higher than they are ln New York City. When this money is loaned to manufacturers manu-facturers who build here, the owner of the money and the borrower will be mutually mu-tually benefited. The increased payrolls, the increased volume of trade, that will result from the proper placing of this monev will be of incalculable benefit to the city and to the State at large. There will be within another year a greater number of steady payrolls, distributing dis-tributing thousands of dollars each month among the working class, than there has ever been before. Now fields of effort will be opened up to the young men and women wo-men of the State, and the professions, long overcrowded, will be thinned out, the young iieople engaging In employment employ-ment in the mills and factories that are bound to come, more than ever before. With the attention that Is being centered cen-tered upon Ctah at this time, with the investors appreciating that I'tah people are loyal to home products and home-made foods, with the growing knowledge that :tah- offers every natural advantage, and possesses great quantities of the raw products used ln many and diversified lines of Industrial enterprise, the outlook for the industrial future of the city is Indeed In-deed brighter at this time than ever before be-fore In the history of the State. |
