OCR Text	Show WHY THESE PIONEERS GIVE THANKS TODAY. Just forty-nine years ago today a devoted band of handcart trundlera arrived In Bait Tke under the leadership of Edward Martin. Fully a fourth of their number were left along the path they had blazed. Another party under the leadership of Jerse Havens left the same place. Iowa City, the Mime date. Sickness, cold, disease and death was the portlrn of one man out of .very four who joined thla party. The dispatching of rercue parties alone saved the entire band from starvation and death. They were brought in well nigh dead, and nothing but the best of care saved them. These men the few who are left of them I are returning vibrant thanks today.
