Show Football Season Opens Friday With Game Scheduled Here A - ! Springville Team To Play Murray In First Grid Game Coach Pehrson Selects Starting Lineup; 48 Candidates Out For Team; Art Hughes Assists 'With Coaching Coach George Pehrson will give local townspeople a preview of the 1916 football edition here Friday when the Springville High team clashes with the Murray club at 2:30. Coach Pehrson will also see what his charges can do in their initial game as well as get a birds-eye view of what to expect for the coming league games. There is no charge for the game, announces Principal P. K. Walker. 48 Men Out For Sport . . . Mentor Pehrson has 48 candidates candi-dates out this year for the team, with representation of seniors, juniors and sophomores being just about equal. Ten regular or semi-regulars semi-regulars of last year's club are back in togs this year, including Captain Ray Black, Harold Norton, Nor-ton, Hal Eggertsen, Erwin Haws Ray Clegg, Kent Miner, Monty Groesbeck, Wayne Bramall, La-Mar La-Mar Clark, and Richard Sund-blom. Captain Black has been shifted from the line to the backfield this year, giving the backfield more weight and power. The line average for this year's club will be close to 165 pounds. The backfield, 180, with the team averaging 167 lbs. Line-up For Friday . . . Coach Pehrson will line up the following from his 48 prospects for the game Friday: Hal Eggertsen, Eggert-sen, quarterback; Capt. Ray Black, fullback; Harold Norton, halfback; Kent Miner, halfback; Boyd Hunter, or Blaine Bird, center; Monty Groesbeck, right guard; Wayne Bramall, left guard; Jack Scouten, left tackle; Richard Sundblom or Dean Packard, Pack-ard, right tackle; Erwin Haws, right end; Ray Clegg, left end. Assisting with the coaching duties, Art Hughes handles the , "problem" candidates of the squad ' taking the greenlings and work- i ing with them on fundamentals of the game. Most of these players are sophomores and juniors. The other candidates for the team include: in-clude: Clyde Christensen, Don Bybee, LaMar Hales, Barney Go-garty Go-garty and 'Billy Duncan, who are strongly vieing for spots on this year's club as backfield men; Oral Dalton, Jimmie Fullmer, line men. League Set Up Changed The league set up this year has been changed, with the withdrawing withdraw-ing of Provo high, a class A school from the district B play. Springville Spring-ville will play three games: Spanish Span-ish Fork at Springville, October 4; Springville at B. Y. U., at Provo, Oct. 11, and Springville at Payson, Oct. 25. The winner of the Nebo district and the runner-up runner-up will then play the winner and runner-up in the Alpine district, the winner of Nebo playing the runner-up of Alpine and the rimner-up of Nebo playing the winner of Alpine with the winners win-ners of those two games meeting to determine the Region Three champion. In other district games this week, Spanish Fork will play at Bingham and Payson will entertain enter-tain Wasatch Academy at Payson. |
