Show Candidate Gives Talk At Southern Meet "Development and protection of our resources has always been the constructive policy and practice prac-tice of the Republican Party," declared de-clared Arthur V. Watkins, Republican Re-publican candidate for United States senate to a county-wide meeting of the Young Republicans Republi-cans at Beaver recently. "Utah has participated in that development and protection. It shouldn't be forgotten that because be-cause of the Republican protective tariff that our mining, sugar beet, cattle and sheep and other industries indus-tries got under way and grew to the stage of their present development. develop-ment. There are many foreign countries where these commodities were producd more cheaply because be-cause of lower standards of living, liv-ing, but the protective tariff kept them out of this country and gave us the American market, the best in the world. Under this policy not only Utah, but the whole country coun-try grew and prospered while Its industries were being established on a solid basis to a point where they could compete withthe rest of the countries of the world and as a result America became the strongest nation in the universe, financially, industrially, and in its moral leadership," Mr. Watkins .said. "It is fortunate that America was strong. Twice within our memories our strength has saved the world from enslavement of the dictators. Foreign countries, notably England and France protested pro-tested vigorously against the protective pro-tective tariff, but their people today to-day have occasion to thank God we had such a policy." "Where, for instance, was there a country in the world," continued continu-ed Mr. Watkins, "which could have produced a Geneva Steel plant and other mammoth wac plants within the space of such a few years? America's war production pro-duction was the miracle of our times." "Don't let anyone mislead you into believing that this came about as a result of Democrat policies. The Democrats were in power only during short intervals of the period per-iod that America's industry grew to the commanding position where it could perform the miracles of war production." "Great as has been its history, neither the party nor the country can live on past glories. We are faced with difficult and pressing problems and we shall meet these problems with open minds. The party does have a constructive program not only for the country at large but for this state. Here the development of our resources and potentialities, by a comprehensive compre-hensive program of new industries based on cheap power and the utilization of our extensive minerals miner-als and hydro-carbons will make the development of new homes and new communities a reality." Road blocks to future progress must be taken away. Private enterprise en-terprise then can go forward to productive heights such as the country has never known before. In that direction lies the future of America. "We believe in a policy of prudent pru-dent progress wherein we shall balance the budget, keep within our means, make America strong, give opportunity to all, and take ! care of those who cannot take care of themselves, and in the end build a stronger ' America which because of its strength, can help the rest of the world." Referring to a recent speech made by his opponent, Senator Murdock, at Denver urging a world-wide use of silver as a monetary mon-etary base, Mr. Watkins declared, "As United States senator I will go as far and as strong as any- one else consistent with the welfare wel-fare of the country, in the promotion promo-tion of silver as money and for industrial in-dustrial uses and will urge the use of all other products in the state of Utah. The record will show my opponent has no monopoly on the promotion of Utah silver and other products." |
