Show SBT5 Utah's Annual Gathering of Storied Attractions in Evidence. 0 A state fair without side shows would be something like ham for breakfast break-fast without eggs satisfactory as far as it goes, but not complete. That, at least, is the view of veteran fairgoers. The Utah state fair is complete. If a person grows eye weary or foot tired wandering down the aisies of exhibits, ex-hibits, either afternoon or evening, there are amusements enough and to spare where one can sit and enjoy a rest. The midway proper boasts all the storied stars of side show fame, from wild animals to the tattooed man, to say nothing of the proverbial snakes, the phrenologists and gypsy fortune tellers. And all around the midway are what the pessimists call the "nickel teasers," teas-ers," which the optimists, however, view through boyhood's rosy glasses. These are the places where one may throw a ring over a knife, or, at least, try the feat; where he limbers up his arm with a few throws at the dolls, or takes a chance on the "wheel of fortune for the box of candy or some equally desirable thing. But these are onlv the side shows to the amusement which the fair officials have provided this 3'car. There are the two main shows every day, either one of them bi enough and varied enough to draw a crowd in ordinary ordi-nary times. The first is in the afternoon at the racetrack, where horse racing is interlarded inter-larded with rope throwing, fancy riding, trick shootiup- acrobatics and the like. The performance yesterday pleased, and pleased greatly, judging from the applause, ap-plause, even if the show was a bit late in getting under way. In tJte evening comes a vaudevillo show with a shit through which prctty girls sing with voices that please, where the bicycle rider spins about and monologists have their turn. Singing and bands provide the musical musi-cal background for the afternoon and evening shows. Several bands are scattered scat-tered hero and there about the grounds, with an orchestra or two tucked away to make sure that there is music everywhere every-where most of the time. Soloists and a quartet helped out. |
