Discovery of what is believed to have been a widespread wide-spread plot on the part of organized negroes ne-groes for a general killing of whites In this locality, and possibly in other parts ! of the south, led officials today to tighten emergency measures and redouble their efforts to apprehend leaders of the alleged organization who are still uncaught. According to committee members, he negro captives readily revealed to them the inner workings of the plan. Today, October (J, the negroes declared, was the date set for the uprising-. Women are s-ald to have been members of the organization, organ-ization, which, the authorities say, was known as the Progressive Farmers and Household I'nion of America. Twenty-one white planters in this district, dis-trict, according to the confessions, had been singled out to be killed first. The killing of the twenty-one, it is assprted, was to-be followed immediately by a general gen-eral massacre of whites, after which the negroes were to take over the .land and til! It. Efforts were being made to connect con-nect white men with the propaganda to arouse tho negroes and Incite them to killing the white residents. |
